There are 2 series of games right now on the GBA that I want badly... but they won't leave Japan.
The first is Earthbound. Japan has Mother 1+2, so we know the 2 games have been emulated successfully onto the GBA. Furthermore, Mother has been translated, but was never released in the West, so translation issues here are not a problem. And Earthbound (Mother 2) made it to the US, but never got a PAL release (damn it), so translation isn't an issue here either. I just want to see this GBA 2-in-1 make it to the West - along with Mother 3, if it ever becomes a reality (it's supposed to hit the GBA, so the rumours go).
The second is Starfy. There are 3 Starfy games on the GBA. It's kind of like a Kirby-esque platformer series (not done by HAL), and it looks great. There's an abundance of stuff on the series on the Japanese Nintendo site (and the 3rd game in the series cameos Warrio). I want this series to come to the West as well.
Why keep the games in Japan for? The West would respond favourably to a GBA Earthbound 2-in-1 release, and Starfy would work here...

These are not the only cases. There were other Japan only games, like Kurukuru Kururin series which only the first game had the European version, and what I want the most would be Nintendo Power's Sutte Hakkun (The only RD2 game that I really love) from SFC, I want a remake of this game!!

Of course there would be many such cases...
It baffles me, however, as to why the two series that I mentioned won't get Western releases?
Starfy is a platform series not unlike the old Super Mario Bros. platformers, the Wario Land platformers, and the Kirby platformers... so why must such a cool looking series be Japanese exclusive?
And Mother/Earthbound... It's set in a make-believ America for goodness sake! Persoanlly, the whole fantasy aspect of RPGs turns me right off them, but here we have 2 RPGs (and maybe a 3rd on in the future), set in a modern urban environment, with cool cartoony pixelated graphics... it's EXACTLY what I've been looking for for some time, and I finally find it, and it's in Japan... (and the US) - and then it's re-released... in JAPAN...
The rest of the world would respond favourably to these games too you know?
As for the many other series 'stuck' in Japan, well, I don't know much about them...

Although I, being in HK, don't need to worry about not being able to buy Japan only or overseas only games, I also understand what you say here. For the Starfy series, I don't know what's Tose doin', but for the Mother series, they can just release the Mother 1+2 just like Super Mario All Stars - including an unreleased game in!

To further add fuel to the fire that the "Earthbound" NES rom is real, the Japanese GBA version has a number of changes implemented from the translated cancelled US version that weren't in the original Japanese release. I found a website with a list of all the changes somewhere. If I find it I'll post it here.
I think it's time for Nintendo to share more of the love. With the Custom Robo, Fire Emblem and Wars series finally escaping into the west maybe Nintendo should focus more on worldwide releases.
Nintendo Europe is being very good with GBA and DS games lately... part of their drive to translate directly from the Japanese rather than from the American. As such quite a few titles over here are retaining their Japanese name rather than a possible US name (I suspect Yoshi's Universal Gravitation will be renamed for a US release, but it's coming here with the Japanese name, like Super Mario Ball before it).

I'm dreaming to have an European game~ but it's not possible. I can only get JP and US releases.
For GBA and DS games, let me see... Super Mario Ball and Polarium are surely translated from Japanese version (look at the boxarts of the three versions of Polarium)
I just hope that the release date of the language versions to be close to each other!

I agree with YL - why not release a GBA compilation? It would sell damn it!
And Fryguy, is that so? They've usd the changes, but won't release the game across the Pacific. Even if it hit the US and ONLY the US, we could all still import it in English...
Maybe if Mother 3 ever comes out, and it hits the West, the first 2 may be released alonside it in this 2-in-1 game? (Wishful thinking... I know...)

I expect that if the GBA Mother 3 is ever ready to go (fingers crossed for E3!) then Mother 1+2 may well finally be ported to the US and Europe. Europe, remember, didn't get either title, and it would be mad to expect the third game to sell well without some kind of background to the series.

Mother 1 + 2 play nicely on GBA, only bad thing about Mother is that the kanji are nearly unreadable on the GBA screen.
About them not being released, I guess it's the weird kind of humor the games use.
And luckily for Mother fans, Nintendo keeps on hinting that Mother 3 will be released on GBA. They just don't give out details about it.

More than hinting, Shigesato Itoi has been saying for quite some time that he's working on Mother 3 on the GBA. It's just a matter of when... and whether it will ever actually be released (the Mother series seems quite prone to being cancelled or not released. Maybe it's an old Happy Happyist curse or something... BLUE!).

And remember Fryguy, I'm in the same boat you're in - I live in a PAL territory too (Asutralia)...
We never got Mother1 or Mother 2 (Earthbound). I hope that E3 changes all of this...

The reason some games come out in Europe and not in America is because the two markets are very different. The UK and I imagine Australia are probably fairly close to the US market, but go somewhere like France or Italy and you'll notice a significant difference in lifestyle. Basically, sometimes a Japanese game will be successful in one region and not another.
I could turn it back on America... why do you get so many games that we don't? I'm still waiting for Custom Robo...

I must admit, "Doshin the Giant" never came to AU, but EU did get it, and "Animal Crossing" hit AU long before EU...
I noted those examples simply to further illustrate your point that there are some inconsistencies between the PAL territories, but largely in the past, those games that did NOT get to the PAL regions didn't get to ANY PAL regions...
It's just a shame.
I would assume that AU and the UK have markets very similar to that of the US, but will have to take your word on the rest of EU (my knowledge is, after all, quite limited, living on the other side of the world and all).

Within the EU it can be fragmented as well. GBA strategy game "Napoleon" was released in Japan and France, and I've recently discovered that while Hamtaro: Rainbow Rescue was cancelled in the UK, it was released last October in selected EU countries (presumably based on the popularity of the series). Now if only I could find some boxart
