This is probably a lost cause but I haven't given up yet. My daughter and I accumulated about 90 stars and were very close to finishing this game when my 3-year old was playing around with the controller and deleted all of the stars. This was quite awhile ago. I am fairly sure I have a memory pack installed but I am not sure if that would be stored there. Is it possible to retrieve any of the stars/memory? If I am able to get anything back is it possible to somehow put a lock on this to prevent it from happening again? Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I really hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think you and your daughter are out of luck. The data for Super Mario 64 is stored directly on the cartridge, and the game doesn't work with the memory pack so nothing is ever stored on it. And unfortunately, once the data in erased, there is no way to get it back. I know it can be discouraging to do all that work and then lose it, but hopefully it'll be just as much fun doing it the second time. As for protecting the data from future incidents, the game has four slots for saving data, and it allows you to copy the data from one slot to another. I recommend copying you main save data to one or more of the other slots after each time you play. That way, if one of them gets erased, you'll still have the others as backup. Just be careful that all of them do not get erased, or you'll be back to square one. It may also help to keep an eye on the young ones! Hope this helps. Enjoy your game!

Confused... do you mean Super Mario World on the Super NES or Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64?
Either way, the save games are kept on the cartridge, and once they're gone, they're gone.
I remember how devastated I was when my 100% completed Yoshi's Island save game was lost by careless save file tampering on behalf of a friend. Weeks of work and exploration... gone...

Sounds like you need to look for different friends.
