So being a college student with a lot of time to kill on campus, and with the DS a little too far out of my price range, I'm starting to think about investing in a GBA. This is my first portable, so I completely missed out on the entire GB/GBC era. Besides Pokemon/Legend of Zelda (nothing against them, I just already know that they were some of the best games on Gameboy ), do you fine gentlemen have any recommendations for me?

The Wario Land games are excellent. Double-excellent, even! Some of the best platforming that handheld gaming has to offer.

Try these titles:
Balloon Kid Solar Striker Radar Mission Mole Mania
And if you ever decide to play Japan-Only games, try these out:
Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (a.k.a. For the Frog the Bell Tolls) (Even though it's in Japanese, the language barrier means nothing. There is already a FAQ about it at GameFAQs.)
X (From the creators of the SNES Star Fox. It'll probably take you time to find it on eBay. Type in "X Game Boy" to make it a bit easier.)
That's probably all that I could think of right now, because I'm busy working on my college work.

A few of my handheld favourites: Balloon KidThe adventure version of Balloon Fight's "Balloon Trip" mode. It's cutesy, but one of the most overlooked games on the Game Boy. Not here though. Everyone here loves it Donkey KongTo be honest, this was the first game that really made me love my Game Boy. Excellent puzzle platforming without all of the high-score-beating stress of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong titles. Kid Icarus: Of Myths and MonstersSequel (or is it prequel?) to the NES classic. Similar gameplay, but a lot more forgiving. Plus, it couldn't hurt to swot up on Pit's adventures before SSBB, right? Mario's PicrossI was a fan of these puzzles when they were in the back of the Sunday Times newspaper, and my nan would cut them out and hand them to me to work on. Now I'm obsessed! I love Picross, and the sequel's on its way to DS. Picross 2 is also available in Japan. Metroid 2: Return of SamusWhile most series were happy to have "spinoffs" or general ports of their games, Metroid 2 was an all-new game in the series, and is possibly more integral to the overall plot than any of the other Metroid games. Despite being four shades of green, it's more atmospheric and nerve-wracking than most games I've played. Mole ManiaAnother funky puzzle adventure. You are a mole, you have a bomb and you have a door. Get the bomb to the door. But there's enemies. Kill the enemies. But what about the spikes? Dig under them. But wait, there's heavy weights in the way? Good lord! I've been stuck on this Goddamn level for ages! Gotta love it Pokemon PinballGuessing if you're a Pokemon fan, you won't need to be told about Pokemon Pinball as well. Two tables, 151 Pokemon to catch... so you'd better get started! Wario Land SeriesAnd finally, yes... the Wario Land games are far and away my favourite Game Boy games overall. The first was quite a straightforward, Mario-style affair, but successfully brought the fun of the Mario series to the handheld in a way SML and SML2 hadn't quite managed. The second is the best, IMHO. This made Wario invincible, gave him weird powers, and set you up for a massive treasure hunt. The third is an extension of the second, with some treasures giving Wario more abilities, allowing you to head back into earlier levels and find even more treasure in previously inaccessible areas. Also great fun! And yes, then Zelda, Pokemon and the Super Mario Land games... but you already said you like them, so I won't bore you any longer

The GBC version of DKC. Sure, the graphics and sound take a dramatic turn for the worse, but the controls are excellent, no more Candy's Save Point (now Candy's Challenge), GB Printer compatibility, and more!

That GBC version of Donkey Kong Country is even better than the GBA one in my opinion . - Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble. You control Kirby by tilting your GBC or GBA. Maybe somebody here might confirm this, but I've read it isn't comfortable in a GBA SP (because of the way you insert the cartridge, which is the opposite of GBC).
- Kirby's Block Ball. Nice Breakout-like game with Kirby as a the ball. With Kirby's powers you can break different kinds of blocks and try to get the maximum score possible.
- Tetris Blast. Very different from traditional Tetris; you create explosions to destroy the lines in the area. Includes a battle mode in which you destroy enemies that have different ways to annoy you.
- Mario's Picross.
- Donkey Kong.

Donkey KongTo be honest, this was the first game that really made me love my Game Boy. Excellent puzzle platforming without all of the high-score-beating stress of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong titles. I remember playing this game for like 20 minutes at my friend's house and falling in love with the GB, too. Refresh my memory fellas: Didn't this game come out alongside or bundled with the Super Game Boy? Surprisingly enough, out of the few Best GB game lists that I've found on the net, this game hasn't been listed. I wonder why it doesn't get more love from people? Anyway, thanks for all of the suggestions so far guys! Keep em comin!

Yep, it was indeed one of the first Super Game Boy games. I don't think it was bundled though, at least not at first. I think Space Invaders was also released alongside it with SGB functionality.
It's a shame it doesn't get more love. It felt like a proper update to the original arcade idea, it was wonderfully varied for a Game Boy title, and has one of the best 8-bit soundtracks of any game I can think of.
Even now, after years, I can still hum that wonderfully catchy ending theme.
If I was to single out two games, Wario Land 2 and Donkey Kong would definitely both be up there - perhaps even higher than the Zeldas and Pokemons.

Yep, it was indeed one of the first Super Game Boy games. I don't think it was bundled though, at least not at first. I I can confirm that. Donkey Kong '94 was the first game I ever had for my Gameboy and it did not come with a Super Gameboy. I'm surprised that no one's mentioned them yet, but Kirby's Dream Land and Kirby's Dream Land 2 are both fun and cheap games. If you like RPGs and missed them the first time around, I'd recommend checking out Dragon Warrior I + II or Dragon Warrior III. Both are worth checking out.

The KDL games are good, but without that faint twinge of nostalgia I feel when playing them, they are exceptionally short and easy. Which doesn't mean they're bad per se... but I much prefer playing later entries in the series.

Here's my top list: - Megaman II has kind of a poor reputation amongst the Megaman fanbase, but I grew up playing it and it was the first MM game I ever beat. Compared to the other GB Megaman games, not only was this easy enough for anyone to pick up and play, but you could actually make it to the game's end. Simple platforming at its best, and the opening theme is really catchy.
- Super Mario Land 2 is the Super Mario World of Gameboydom. Tons of secrets, lots to explore, and great music. Plus there's a level where you can "swim" through tree sap, which is hilarious AND fun.
- Wario Land had so many secrets and side-paths. Not as many as Wario Land 2, but WL1 doesn't have the same overcomplication of its sequel. That, and the Jet Helmet is wintastic.
- Kirby's Dream Land has incredible replayability, awesome music and...um...hushpuppies. But seriously, even though Kirby lacks his Copy ability, the original romp through Dreamland is worth playing over and over again. Just beware, because it's pretty short.
- Megaman Battle Network 2 is actually for the GBA, but it's the best in the series (aside from Megaman Network Transmission, which is incredible but on the GameCube) with the easiest gameplay mechanics and the most colorful bosses. Even if the story is flat and the characters suck, the play is aaaaaall there. (And Cutman is in the game, w00t!)

Metal Gear Solid for GBC. Even without the 3D graphics and a not-so-incredibly-great-but-still-pretty-good-storyline it still plays like the PS game. IGN even gave it a 10. If you're a Metal Gear fan you should play this.

Donkey Kong Land 2 and 3 reeks. They look like a bootleg version of their Super NES counterpart. The first one with Donkey and Diddy is better and more initiative, it seems like a prelogue to DKC2: Diddy's Kong Quest. I recommend that you should play the first one only. There is only four worlds, tons of challenges and tons of levels. Although DKL only has Rambi and Expresso and it's also the first GB game that became a saffron banana themed catridge. There's still an excellent time to play one of the first masterpiece of Super Game Boy.

Games I recomend are best from first to last as follows: Gameboy gallery (GB EU ONLY great with sgb), Hoyle Card Games, Mario' Picross, Disney's Mulan ( great on SGB) Pokemon Yellow, Tetris v1.1, Tetris v1.0 , Mario Land 2, Game and wach gallery 1-4, Yoshi no tamago, animaniacs (great on sgb) toy story 1 (Great on sgb), Mickey's Magic wands, Mickey's Dangerous chase, and Gameboy Camera Gold edition. These games are extremely cheap on ebay as that is were I got them.
