This wasn't mentioned anywhere on the site, so I thought I'd post it here: In Vs. Ice Climber, in addition to the wind and 'snow bee' enemies there is a Butterfly which may replace the Condor after clearing eight phases in a row and either winning or failing the Super Bonus Stage. From Japanese videos of the Famicom Disk System version of Ice Climber, it appears to have been replaced with a blue Condor. Butterfly sprite: Wind effect like that used in JP SMB2?:

That goes to show how bad I am at the game! ;D
That's pretty damn cool though. Maybe I need to slave away at this to see it myself.

I was always better at Balloon Fight... The arcade and FDS of Ice Climber seem pretty much a joke in the difficulty slope though. I'm not sure if you noticed, but I used ArtMoney (a temporary data hex editor program like Cheat Engine) to generate an infinite lives code (there must be a better way, does anyone know how to search for cheats with MAME?) and died a load of times trying to get to the Super Bonus Stage.

Coolies! I didn't know the arcade version had some many minor differences from the NES one. (Including a few musical cues) Would've been nice to have the pallette-swap levels, having different colored levels would've helped diversify them a bit more. I recall the "VS" arcade version of Super Mario Bros. had alot of differences to. (Such as replacing the "copy & paste" levels with ones from "Lost Levels")
