But those damn 1-Up Mushrooms are so plentiful that you're pratically immortal - seriously what do I need over 100 lives for in New SMB and both Yoshi's Island games?

Actually, I don't think I ever have, either. I've heard a rumor there's a secret screen that says "Game Over", but I can't confirm that. There should be an easter egg that would encourage players to lose all their lives. Then you go to a secret level called "Plumber Heaven" or "That Big Drain Pipe in the Sky" or something.
