Someday I'll open my keyboard and take the Esc key away. Hate that - I just pressed it when I am about to post.
First of all, the post is here because it has something to do with new systems like GC and DS.
SNES / SFC is surely a very good 2D console, but... is it the best?
Here's my comparism between SNES and various Nintendo consoles (Not non-Nintendo ones since I don't play them frequently):
Graphics:
SNES:
Awesome!!!! Not only that it supports a lot of colours, but also its colors are in a quite high contrast. Things won't get blurred together when displayed on even a poor TV box connected to an LCD monitor1.
GBA:
Well, it does support 4096 colour (from a 262144 colour palette) graphics, but the color it produces aren't as "sharp" as that of SNES.
GC:
A lot like GBA in its 2D parts, except that it display in 24-bit full colour.
DS:
Talking only about 2D part, it features more colour than GBA. But then, still, it can't produce colour in a high contrast and broghtness like the SNES.
The winner: Tie for DS and SNES. (GBA is the loser)
Resolution:
The higher the res, the better the graphics can be. However, for a home console, it can't be too big since most people will only play them through TV screens, ignoring that a computer monitor is much better.
SNES: 256*224
GBA: 240*160 (More like a PDA res than a videogame console res)
GC: 640*480 (digital output)
DS: 256*192*2
I'd announce Gamecube as the winner.
Sound:
SNES:
It doesn't feature voice, and its audio effect isn't awesome. However, its BGMs are normally good! Take a look at NP Sutte Hakkun, and you'll know why.
GBA:
It supports vioce, but the sound that you hear are quite blurry: compare SNES Mario games and Super Mario Advance series and you'll know how awful GBA games are. For the better ones, like Golden Sun, it still cannot produce music as nice than SNES.
GC:
Dolby Digital supported. No match, However, sometimes MIDI-like music are better than realastic ones.
DS:
Same as GC, but the surround audio is just a "virtual" one.
Winner: SNES. Depending on what you like, you may say GC has better audio.
Control:
SNES:
8 buttons, 1 directional pad. Much like Nintendo DS.
GBA:
Famicom setting + 2 shoulder buttons, making a total of 6 buttons + 1 directional pad.
GC:
6 buttons, 2 pressure-sensible shoulder buttons, 2 3D pads, 1 2D pad. You can even add other hardware components! Wow!
DS:
=SNES + Touch screen + Mic
Winner: Gamecube - tough 2D games on it won't use all those buttons.
Console life:
A console's life is one of the ways to mesure how popular a console is. For SFC in Japan, its more than 10 years - Until 2004's year end, Nintendo is still updating the online scoreboard of Sutte Hakkun.
GBA:
The provision of the console life of GBA is about 5 years in terms of game release. but I don't know when will people stop playing it.
GC/DS: Who knows?
Winner: None, I can't tell until it's 10 years or later2.
Conclusion:
You see? SNES and GC win the most, followed by the DS. It's hard to say which is the best 2D console. But why GC is here? It's because that specifically some 2D stuff (like Four Swords Adventure and GameBoy Player) are there. When comparing, I don't consdier the 3D part of SNES, GC and DS.
The overall winner:........ Draw! (But surely GBA=loser in terms of hardware ability)
1An LCD monitor is usually not as good as a CRT. Its colour is not too accurate, and you'll have to face it at a certain range of angle to see the correct colour.
2Some people are still playing Famicom now! A console's life can sometimes be very long. Bt then, WHY DON'T PEOPLE PLAY COLOR TV NOW?
EDIT: Just fixed 2 spelling mistakes.
And ya, In case you're wondering, Super Famicom is my fav console.
