Because he wants to - why should you doubt him? Was there a reason for him to change Mario from 2D to 3D? Probably not. Did it work? Damn right it did. You know, Miyamoto didn't have to reinvent the 2D platform game everytime there was a new Mario game. But going from 2D to 3D demanded that new mechanics be invented because the extra dimension completely changes the dynamics. But there's no reason to reinvent the wheel. ... Unless the Revolution controller itself changes the dynamics. Then it's okay to revolutionize 3D platformers.

As for "replacing" each other... kinda yeah. Since SM64 there have been NO 2D Mario games to speak of. Paper Mario is more of a spinoff series, so I don't know why that was included. But yes, 3D seems to have replaced 2D, which is a shame, because both are good in their own ways. Thank God for New Super Mario Bros.! I don't think it has, honestly. We've seen what, 2 fully 3D Mario games since then? 2-0 isn't exactly conclusive evidence in my view. I also brought up Paper Mario because there have been just as many PMs as there have been 3D Mario Platformers. Infact, if I'm not mistaken since the release of SM64 and up to the titles we know of now, we've seen... - 2, maybe 3 3D Mario Platformers (SMS, 64 and maybe 64DS (Different enough to count, I guess)) - 1 2D Mario Platformer (New SMB) - 4 RPGs (2 Paper Marios and 2 M&Ls) which doesn't look all that one sided. Infact, counting multiplayer, Yoshi and Wario spinoffs there have been... - 4 Karts (64, SC, DD and Arcade GP) - 4 Tennises (what's the plural of tennis?) (64, GBC, GCN and GBA) - 4 Golfs (64, GBC, GCN and GBA) - 7 Parties (3 for 64, 4 for GCN) - 1 Baseball - 1 Soccer - 1 Dance Dance Game - 1 2D non-sidescrolling Platofrmer (M vs. DK) - 3 2D Yoshi Platformers (Story, T&G and Topsy Turvy) - 1 or 2 (I think - I have no idea) 2D Wario Platformers - 1 '2.5D' Luigi game - 1 '2.5D' Wario game seems to me, at least, like we've gotten more 2D Platformers than 3D. Of course, we've seen a huge lot of multiplayer spin-offs, with surely more to come. Wow, I never realised how many there were. So yeah, I still don't think 3D ever replaced 2D. Of course, thats my opinion. As for 'needing' to release a 3D Mario on the N64, I doubt it. Shigzy and the rest of the Nintendo crew (sounds like some really bad hip-hop group) could have released another 2D Platformer, perhaps with some virtual boy-esque running into the background. I don't think he had to do it at all. But as I've said, when has Shiggy ever done anything bad? Nope, I can't think of anything either. Thats why I trust his decision to revamp/remake the 3D Platformer, if that is what he is doing. I'm sure it will be gold.

Plus Mario Kart DS Plus Mario Party Advance. What we really need is a MARIO 2D and 3D Platform rather than somebody else. Its time for Mario to start saving the world rather than his brother, some look-a-like guy, a princess (don't forget, new "Super Princess Peach" for DS ) or a dinosaur.

Whoops, I was going ot put Super Princess Peach in there. Did forget about MKDS (which is strange - since its very high on my wanted list) and MPA, the single-played focussed party game (which really sounds dodgy) and I could've (should've?) put the WarioWares in. But I think I have proven my point, anyway. I'm just not sure what my point was. Oh yeah, it was "say no to drugs".

I think my point is that it was unrealistic for everyone's expectations to be so high for the next Mario game. Mario already made the jump (so to speak) from 2D to 3D. He can't do it again. There's only one first time. So whatever the next step is, I personally doubt if it'll be as dramatic. Even if Miyamoto reinvents 3D platforming. Even if it is revolutionary. 2D or 3D, they've both been done. Not to get too philosophical, but exactly what makes a Mario game a Mario game? For me, it's not the character itself, but the gameplay. Stick Mario in a tennis game, and that doesn't make tennis a Mario game. It makes it a tennis game with Mario. And though it may be a fun tennis game, it's not the game that I think of when I think of Mario. I guess my point (er, my other point) is.... um.... Say no to drugs.

Let's not forget Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

Thats in there, I remembered that one, surprisingly. I really need to get my copy of that back off my cousin. What did that have to do with anything? I'm not sure.
As for "what makes a Mario game a Mario game?"... wow, good question. I really don't know. I could say the gameplay, but its so varied - SMB2 is a Mario game... SMS is a Mario game.... PM is a Mario game.... SMRPG is a Mario game... yet they're all so different to SMB, SMB3 and SMW. Real tricky.

A Mario game is a game featuring Mario (and/or friends), while what I consider to be PROPER Mario games are those that are also scrolling platformers.
Mario VS. Donkey Kong has more in common with classic Donkey Kong, with working in the constraints of a set room being the key gameplay aspect. And so I consider that in the classic Donkey Kong series.
