Since the inlcusion of James McCloud as a playable character in the F-Zero games, several of us fans have marvelled at the possibility of all Nintendo space franchises belonging to the same universe. Though SSBM shouldn't serve as evidence for anything, there is a cool part of the intro where the Blue Falcon, Samus's Starship and the Great Fox are all visible in one frame. That encouraged me to elaborate. Captain Falcon, Samus, Fox... they are all good guys, but with a mercenary/bounty hunter twist to it. If Nintendo managed to make a game where you could choose to play as one of them in search of a bounty, and had to face-off against the other two, I would buy it. I think I would buy it even if it received bad reviews.
But of course, some problems arise if all Nintendo space franchises are supposed to happen in the same universe: there are a major number of inconsistencies. For one, James McCloud is a human in the F-Zero games, and he seems to be a humanoid fox like his son in Star Fox artwork and game images. But take a look at the characters Wolf and Octoman of the F-Zero games. They are proof of humanoid animal races existing in the F-Zero universe. Maybe just Fox's mother is a Fox-woman.
Another interesting point is Falco. Since not much is known about his past, I used to like thinking that he was the last surviving member of the Chozo, the bird-people from Metroid.
Could any space other franchises besides the ones already mentioned happen in the same universe? Could Captain Olimar belong to that universe? And the bad guy from Space Tropics? And the bad guy from Mother? And Tatanga?

The two James McCloud's aren't the same. The F-Zero James is basically just a cameo. But I have noticed some other things. In both F-Zero and Metroid, there is a galactic space federation. In SSBM, there is a scene that shows Zebes is right near Pop Star. In Pikmin, after you bring one part back to the ship, Olimar mentions he needs that part to protect him from Space Pirates. There's some others things I noticed that I can't seem to remember at the moment.

Pikmin also appear in Toadstool Tour...
Link and Samus are in SMRPG...
Link and Mario are in DKC2...
If you wanted to, you could link them together. I'm not a huge fan of it though. I did, however, once thing up which franchises could be easily mixed together.
F-Zero and Metroid could easily fit together.
Mario and Kirby are extremely compatible.
Donkey Kong and Star Fox both have anthromorphic animal people. DK could take place on a primitive planet somnewhere in the SF universe.

Also, both the F-Zero machines and StarFox's Arwings use a 'G-Diffuser'. But really, if you think about it, all the Nintendo franchises could be in the same universe. After all, a universe is a pretty big place.

Too... much... nonsense... !!! For a video-game fan, you don't seem to like the universal geeky duty of coming up with stupid ideas to fix the faults of the created universes that were either intended by the creators or just totally ignored. It might be nonsense, but it is what keeps the geeks alive. If it weren't for the loyalty that we all have to that duty, there'd be no Klingon courses, no Death Star models, no Elvish Internet dictionaries. There wouldn't even be a Nintendo Database (at least not one with much of a following). Edit: Other things that would be missed: Legend Of Zelda invented storylines, endless message boards of complaints about comic book superhero movies, etc.

I think it'd be cool if Nintendo would add more of a story to SSB. Of course it wouldn't be considered part of the storyline for all the games. Just sort of a "what if..." kinda thing.

I've always wondered if F-Zero and Metroid took place in the same universe as they both make mention to a 'Galactic Federation"...

If you ever compare NinDB to a Klingon dictionary again, death shall be done to thee. ;D I am a fan of geekdom, but not always of the pursuits of its individual members. I find attempts to forge a coherent Zelda storyline interesting, but I find attempts to link game "universes" (ugh, feel dirty) fruitless, and ultimately a disappointing waste of time. I love my cameos, but I don't think of them as ruptures in the game-time continuum or anything like that. I just think there's so many important things to think about day to day that it seems a waste of precious brain cells to devote them to something like that.

Sorry for the comparison ;D , Mr. Fryguy. You have made your point. Your site is much better than any Klingon dictionary. And if your site consisted only of the Splash image, it would still be better. Thanks for stopping by and tolerating my arrogance. To be honest, Star Trek is probably my least favorite of all franchises I have made comments about, and the existance of Trekkies, wether or not they study Klingon has always turned me off. But I will still say this: FryguybelnISlaHbejtaHbe' That is Klingon for: Fryguy clearly does not need to please me anymore. At least according to a reliable source. I am a huge fan of sub-created universes, and I despise lame cross-overs (e.g.: The Super-Friends, Freddy Vs. Jason), but when they are done in an excellent (SSB) or at least acceptable manner (Alien Vs. Predator), they are welcome. I usually don't take cameos very seriously, but James McCloud in F-Zero always seemed to hint much more.

I'd say part of the fun of SSB/SSBM is that it isn't explained at all. It is just like a big Nintendo toybox... with fighting! Can't say fairer than that.
I never really got into Star Trek. Seemed too sterile for my liking. Give me Star Wars any day. Haha, silly Wookies! ;D

James McCloud doesn't seem to be hinting at anything to me... After all, F-Zero's James is a member of Galaxy Dogs, not StarFox... plus, y'know... he's human.
But if want to look for hints in cameos... in Kirby's Dream Land 3, there's a stage where you have to kill Metroids to help Samus out. That just didn't fit at all...

In "The Phantom Menace", there is a scene in the Senate where you can see the representatives of various alien races, among them beings that look like E.T. and beings that look like the "serpents" from the Alien series. They were included by George Lucas as a nod to movie fans. Wouldn't it be cool if for Episode III there were seats in the Senate for Chozos and Cornerians? But I don't think Lucas cares for Nintendo more than for other video-game publishers.
