Ooh nasty. I don't know how you get around that problem, though I have seen it before.

I wouldn't normally advise this, and I still bring hugely heavy caution in doing so...but one solution you might be able to try is popping the cart open, checking for a battery, removing the battery, playing the game with no battery, putting the battery back in, then seeing how it goes from there. But as I said, I highly do not recommend this unless you have absolutely no other choice, and you know what you're doing. Otherwise, take it to a used game store where they repair consoles, controllers, recondition CDs/DVDs, etc. etc. They might be able to better help you.
Edit: Wait, in the DS? Does the game work normally in your Gameboy Advance handheld?

Had this problem with other Cart. games. I usually reset it when it says "data is lost". It works(for Mario Tennis). If you bought it used get the receit and trade it out. Hope it works out for you.

The other game on the cart works o.k (Mario Bros) the problem arises because it has been saved on another console (the who I bought it off) and when I turn it on its not finding the data, so I need to reset the game, I havent got an advance console just a d.s.

When you save a game it goes direct to the cart - it doesn't save onto the system itself (neither the GBA or the DS have a hard drive).
The problem is probably an error within the game itself, something quite common to this particular game as far as I've seen.
Perhaps you should contact Nintendo and ask them about it.
