Hey guys! Long time, no post I hurt my leg, and I've been bogged with work this semester, so I haven't been around much. BUT I'm back (from the future!), and I wanna chitchat about what you guys think of Kid Icarus Rev. Think it's gonna happen? Is it true that Retro Studios is reviving this series as well? Will it even play the same? So many questions...
Personally, I've had one particular idea for a Kid Icarus game for some time. Regardless of it being on a next-gen console, I strongly feel that the series would be done the best justice if it stayed a 2D platformer. 3D graphics are fine, but 2D gameplay is where it's at. I picture it looked along the lines of Tomba! for the Playstation (Tomba 2 in particular, because that one actually had 3D graphics).
Pit still runs and jumps and shoots, but now he can choose paths that may lead him into the background or foreground, and there's plenty of objects to interact with that show the 3D nature of the game in a 2D world. For a good comparison you can whip up right away, imagine playing the Zelda dungeon area in Adventure mode of SSB Melee. Now picture being able to enter those doorways, and they actually will lead you to separate rooms and paths through the level. Something like Goemon's Great Adventure on the N64 or Yoshi's Story; you're on this 2D path, but you can opt to take separate routes, that will move you "3-dimensionally" through the environment.
Think I explained that one enough?
But seriously. This series could not be done in first person like Metroid can. And I can't really see it working like Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time either. If they want to revive Kid Icarus, I think designing it with a retro feel in mind is the way to go, totally.
Edit: With that in mind, a plot. Just for curiousity's sake.
I came up with the idea that, even though some people say Myths and Monsters takes place after Angel Land Story, they go in the order of the games' release. Pit falls after flying too close to the sun, and losing the Sacred Treasures to the heat, but he is rescued by some sort of phoenix and left on an island. Here he learns the mechanics of the game, and is then introduced to the main antagonists: a trio of siblings [not sure what kinda creatures they would be], who are apparently related to Medusa and want revenge. How fitting. Pit is once again sent to the Underworld and must work his way back to the surface and the giant tower the badguys have built, where he needs to recover the Sacred Treasures and save the day all over again. Simple nuff, but I think, again, the series would be better left retro, and not complicated and overdrawn.
