I've played Fire Emblem for GBA (Rekka no Ken) up to somewhere past level 20 on about three or four different occasions, but I've never managed to finish game. I end up getting stuck, and then I lose interest. (I mean, if you spend an hour or more on one map, then end up losing a few vital characters, it's kind of discouraging.) I had a similar experience with Path of Radiance last year. I'm thinking of taking another run at it, but I'd like to get some general advice so I can be better prepared for the later levels.
I already know you should avoid using the initially powerful characters in favor of leveling up the weaker characters (which often become the more powerful characters anyway). Any other general hints, specifically for Path of Radiance?
Also, should I level up all the characters evenly, or is it better to form a consistent team and level up those characters specifically?

Let's see....
You should check the growth rate (look for the FAQs and walkthroughs. You have to - if you want to complete any FE games besides FE2 and FE8., and use the characters with higher growth rate. However, some characters, like Nino, join the group only when the game is going to an end.
And it's better to have a number of characters to be specifically strong. For FE6, we need about 6; for FE7, since there are 3 lords and quite a number of important characters (that are required to show up in the chapter frequently), I suggest you to train the lords themselves. Lyn and Hector will end up with amazing stats, so no worry.
Not losing main units is not enough. You should aim to keep all characters alive.

Sounds like poor game design. I used to try to keep everyone alive, but that got tedious. Now I'll accept minor losses. Anyway, thanks for the advice.

These are the universal rules.
-Try not to use high level characters(like Lv 1 paladins in the early stages of the game). They'll steal Exp from weaker units -Level up units together. Dont let one get too high. -Killing a boss gets more Exp. Try saving the last hit for a weaker unit. -Dont leave units with low HP out -Heal every turn, even if you only heal 1hp. It helps level up your healer and keeps the party in tip top shape. Use a heal staff (the weakest one) to heal minor wounds -Use a mage, shaman or monk. They can use staffs at there next class -Protect your healer! - Weapons make the difference. Only take the disivantage(like having a sword attack a lance) if you have a high hit rate and low damage rate. This is good for leveling up characters. -Pay attention to the Hit and Mt when you chose to attack a foe -give every unit a Vulnery or Elixer. -Try to get every chest and item. They'll become very usefull later on -Only upgrade a unit if there 20 (no lower then 18)
