In the old NES artwork he is quite clearly brown-haired.

Wasn't Link blonde in the artwork for the original Legend of Zelda, too?

Well... err... kinda. More a gingery-blonde. Kinda hard to tell. I also thought I would present a Pit montage to help ease any doubts one may have over his illustrious lineage. Kid Icarus (NES 1986)Pit's first look. Big, fluffy hair and beady eyes. Cute, one might say. Simple, say others. Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters (GB 1991)Pit gains a Greek headband, some whites in his eyes, but is no less cute. I prefer this look to his NES appearance. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC 2001)Based more on his original look, but given a bit of a makeover. The beady eyes are back, but his wingspan is more impressive. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii 2007?)Combine all of those looks, add a little extra flourish, and Pit arrives. Less cute, but he still has a lot in common with each stage of his evolution, from the shoulder pads, arm and leg pads... the headband is back, and he's finally got a proper shape. Suffice it to say, if this is how he had been originally designed, the game probably would not have been called "Kid" Icarus. Note... Captain N does not count. Ever.

NEVER? Awwww....
But now that Pit's in, and Mega Man and Simon are on the submissions list he's selected to show... damn. I was really hopin' *makes an "aw shucks" face*

Well... err... kinda. More a gingery-blonde. Kinda hard to tell. Eh, close enough. I always thought he looked pretty gingery in Ocarina of Time, anyway. And if Captain N EVER returns in any form... well, the feeling I'd have is indescribable. But it's certainly not good.

To me, that artwork shown on the top of this page looks red-head to me. Even his SSB Trophy is a redhead. (And I don't mean Anime-type redhead where the hair is literally red, but real-life redhead with orange hair)

Nice montage there, fryguy. It's nice to be able to see the evolution. I like Pit's new design a lot, I must say. It's like he's grown up from his last appearance.
And I concur with the Link statements - he's changed A LOT since his NES beginnings. And he had brown hair on the SNES/GB games, and I think in the Oracle games too...

No, Link's Awakening was the end of the brown-haired Link era.

And the big-nosed era. He might be all "cool" and stuff now, but when he was a short elf with a pointy nose and mad hair it made him stand out a bit. The first shots of Zelda 64 featured him in the old-style. If it wasn't one of the best games ever, I'd have been a bit disappointed. But even a more serious-looking Link runs away from a Big Goron Hug, so it wasn't all bad.

Ocarina CAN be overrated, Fry, don't lie When a self-proclaimed Zelda fan friend won't touch Link to the Past because Ocarina is the pinnacle, and therefore, only "true" Zelda game... it's overrated XD

Can anybody tell me what those fancy gold rings around Pits arm are?

They're apparently what makes his Light Arrows. When he "nocks" the arrow, the rings go forwards, and when he draws, they pull back, forming the arrow and the string. Cool, huh?

Link kept his big pointy nose in OoT. In fact, it was delightfully pointy that he could put an eye out with it.
The loss of such a nose is a crime.

This thread needs a Link montage now.

Bloody hell... alright then... Legend of Zelda (NES 1986/G&W 1987) Link's first appearance as a little elf. He's small, he's quite cute, and he's got a hooter and a half! Adventure of Link (NES 1987) This is supposed to be a grown up version of the above Link. His hair seems more brown, but you can see where they're coming from. A Link to the Past (SNES 1991) (Also Link's Awakening) These two games pretty much used the same artwork for Link, with one or two new images. His hair is even bigger, but his proportions have been evened out. Still looks quite similar to the AoL Link, even though they're supposed to be different characters. Ocarina of Time (N64 1998) (Also Majora's Mask) Link grows up, becomes all muscular and "real" looking. The only thing that tells you he's an elf are those ears... but that's okay, because they also abandoned the whole "elf" thing - he's a Hylian now, raised in the Kokiri Forest by a talking tree. Sounds like elfish behaviour to me! Oracles (GBC 2001) Link returns to the Game Boy, and the artists shake it up by mixing his old SNES look with his new N64 look. But they make him look more cartoony. But nothing compared to.... The Wind Waker (GC 1986) (Also Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass and Four Swords series) Link is rebuilt in completely the opposite direction. He has been made more expressive, more colourful, and he's short again! Even his ears aren't all that pointy. Twilight Princess (GC/Wii 2006) ...and back again! After a stint as a simple cartoon, Link has bounced back to look even more gritty and "real" than his N64 incarnation. His clothes are tatty, his sword and shield are dirty... and he turns into a wolf. So, Link has had a bit of a mixed bag in his career. From tiny cartoon to serious manga to tiny cartoon and serious manga again. I guess this is why we should never try to second guess Nintendo!
