My examination is finished today. According to my original plan, I would go and get myself Shunkan Puzzloop (Japanese version of Magnetica), New Super Mario Bros (Japanese version) and Super Mario Strikers (Japanese). As for hardware I would have Memory Card 1019 (US, certainly).
But I couldn't buy the games.
When I started asking for New Super Mario Bros, they say that they are already totally sold out despite the high selling price. And today is 26 May, the day right after 25 May, the launch of the JP New SMB.
While the Japanese version is sold out, there are still quite a large number of stock of the US version. Now you know why Nintendo is selling it in yellow boxes.
And when I ask for Magnetica, what I know is that they are already sold out. While it is so much popular, another game by Mitcehll, Polarium, is again... not selling. Duh.
The third game, Super Mario Strikers, I don't think I'll see it again. Any GC game sold out won't come back, and my only chance is second hand.
And because of those, I didn't buy myself any DS game. For GC I had Mario Party 6 (Second hand, still comes with Mic and Club Nintendo serial number sheet. The price is about £15)
-------------------------------------------
And finally... The Memory Card 1019 which I wanted to buy one year ago.... is still there. and the price has dropped to £20. I got it, of course. But.... How am I supposed to open it without doing much damage to the package?

Heh, I pre-ordered my black DS Lite and New Super Mario Bros. a couple days ago. I should be guaranteed copies of them on their respective releases next month.
If I ever want to pick up some old game, it's always worth looking for second-hand copies. You can judge yourself if the packaging quality is decent - and more often than not they have all the manuals and stuff. If you buy off eBay, it's worth looking out for sealed copies.
As for opening hardware boxes without damaging the packaging, I don't exactly know how it is over there. Over here there's a big sticker holding the top to the side. I tend to cut along the edge of the sticker with a small knife or pair of scissors to avoid ripping the packaging.

I want New SMB in yellow box. If I want to have the US version, I am playing it here already. Now all I can do is wait... having such a big demand the shops must have more orders later. I'll look there than.
Magnetica and Super Mario Strikers are not new or very old game, and because of that, I can't get any first hand or second hand. Most second hand games are in perfect boxes here and I have no worry on that. Later I should try going there again or try another mall. If I can't buy them, then I may go auction.
It is not a box. if it is, I would just do what you do. After investigation, I think I can't opein it without damaging... at least I don't have such ability. I here only aim for minimal damage.... if I can.
========================== EDIT: Some comments after messing up:
Bah! I pulled out my GC and realized that the video part of the AV cable is not working. Which means I have to rely on my not-working-properly digital output cable.
I wanted to try Mario Party 6, but I couldn't - the Memory Card requires formatting, and the bios screen can only be entered through AV mode!
Ultimatey, that means I have to go out again, looking for not only the Japanese version of New SMB and Magnetica, but also a new GC AV Cable. I intended to use my money to celebrate to myself for going through the exam, but... it seems that I need to repair more than to get new things. LAAAAAAAAAME!!!!!

He would probably use it on a US GCN.

Actually, I believe US Memory Cards work perfectly fine on Japanese Gamecubes... as long as all the data stored on it is from one region.

Well, I asked a few people and 100% of them say 1019 workd on the JP version of GC. Adcutlly, only the GC system, the AC Adaptor and the games are restrained by regions. I can even put in a US version of GB Player as long as I have the Japanese startup disc!
And I already got the AV cable. All of what I bought works.

Yes, you can only have save data from one region on a memory card at any one time, but you can use it on any system. But if you try and use a US or PAL memory card on a Japanese game, it will wipe everything on the memory card if you want to save that Japanese game.
I recommend having more than one memory card if you're importing. But then that almost defeats the object of having such a big memory card, doesn't it?
