It's been confirmed here: www.gametab.com/news/566914/The Wii will use friend codes rather than an online style more like Xbox Live. So, what are your thoughts? Do you love friend codes and are glad that Nintendo's using them? Were you hoping for something different? I don't have a DS, so I'm undecided.

Hey, as long as it actually works for me, and I actually get online, I'm not too fussed.

Nothing surprising, really.
What I'd like to see is a universal friend code in addition to the regular friend codes. So, basically, if you meet someone online and have alot of fun play Red Steel against them, then you can give them just your Red Steel code, but for people who you really like who you'd love to play anything with, they get a universal friend code that allows them access to you in all your games.
Also, people who hold your universal friend code will be able to chat (and voice chat, if its there) with you at any time you allow it, while people with regular friend codes would only be able to if you are playing that game.
There needs to be an email system, too. Universal friends get full email priviledges, while others can simply send inivitations or something similar (you know, like "SSB Brawl tournament this Friday, starts at 9pm", or whatever).

Meh... Friend Codes aren't all that limiting. I can still play Mario Kart, Metroid or Tetris against any number of randoms...
But part of the thing with DS codes is that you can instantly get the Friend Code of anyone you play locally. This clearly isn't possible with a home console.
I'm sure the Wii will have a way of circumventing this problem... probably with the messaging system or something. It would be nice if you could pick Friends you're playing against for later bouts.
But Friend Codes for certain games are a must. I'd hate Animal Crossing so much if anyone could stomp around and steal all my fruit whenever I opened the gates.

MPH does this. There called rivals. I could see it carried over to other games as well.
