I played a lot of World of Warcraft over the summer, and it was nothing short of an experience. I used to badmouth MMORPGs a lot, but after sitting down till 6 in the morning with all my buddies talking over headsets and blasting orcs with magic missiles and the like... it's beyond awesome, and I swallowed my words.
The Wii has the potential to offer some really awesome online content. We're already seeing it. But what about an actual MMORPG, the coup-de-grace of online gaming? Would Nintendo do it? Would they ALLOW it? And what kinda games do you want to see in that genre?
Personally, I'm with everyone on Pokemon. But I'd also like to see a brand-spankin-new franchise using the genre, because that's what Nintendo could use most right now.

I don't see why it wouldn't happen.
I wouldn't want to play one, though.

I was the exact oppoiste with WoW. I though it would be cool, but was totally boaring
I think Pokemon would work besst, but would be cool if Miyamoto tried his hand at it. Now that would be an experience.

Reggie said in an interview early this year that Nintendo had no plans to make an MMORPG, but would love to see one for the system made by a third party.
So no, not anytime soon. Hopefully they'll change their minds eventually.

Hopefully they'll change their minds eventually. Keep in mind Reggie also said there'd be no redesign for the DS, and three days later they unveiled the DSLite. XD Reggie may be the man, but he's not always honest.

I'm not sure a Pokemon MMO would work. Five trainers running around Viridian Forest ganging up on a Caterpie just wouldn't look right. And if you can't team up, what's the point of playing an MMO? Zelda or Fire Emblem would work nicely, but there's already a million fantasy MMOs. A crazy Earthbound MMO would be unique and awesome.
I wrote this with my Wii!

A Pokémon MMORPG where trainers gang up on wild Pokémon would be stupid.
But Pokémon as it is lends itself perfectly to an MMORPG. The only change they'd need to make to the formula is to change the random trainers you encounter into living, breathing, online players. You could still team up and travel in groups, doing double battles against wild Pokémon like in DP.

In answer to the poll, I have no idea. I'm sure it'd be possible, but I don't see them becoming particularly big in the console arena for some time. And while a Pokemon MMORPG probably seems the most likely, and the most awesome, I'd be surprised if Nintendo went that route. They'd probably try and build a new franchise, or adapt something like Animal Crossing. And console MMOs aren't a sure thing yet, so it's not very likely that many third parties will get on board until one takes a massive risk that becomes a runaway success. That "one" is usually Nintendo - back to square one

I remember reading a while back that Nintendo is partnering up with Nexon, the makers of Maplestory, to make an MMO. I'm not sure how reliable that information is, but there you are.
I agree that Pokemon would be the best franchise to adapt. The only problems I could foresee would be:
1. Strong players beating weak players for whatever money they had. 2. How would Team Rocket work? Would they be players, NPCs, or not included at all?

Team Rocket haven't been included in a game for seven years, anyway. They could still throw in a team and Gym Leaders/Elite Four as NPCs, though. EDIT: As for the money thing, perhaps they could introduce new ways of making money instead of through battles. Gym tournaments, contests, harvesting berries, selling Pokémon... just a few ideas.

Well, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to establish some kind of level-matching system before battle commences. Besides, surely the amount of EXP gained from beating a low level character wouldn't be worth the effort when there are high level characters with lots of EXP (if you beat 'em of course).
They'd probably have to scrap the whiting-out and give a smaller percentage of money lost.
But it's the same with any MMORPG. High level characters can run around killing low level characters - but on the whole they don't bother.

Even if they aren't doing that, it would still look wierd to see gang trainers running around KOing dozens of Pokemon.

In DP, if you encounter a wild Pokémon while you're travelling with someone, two wild Pokémon will appear, and you'll face them in a double battle. I don't see why it couldn't just be like that.

You all know my views on a Pikmin-flavoured MMO. And recently I've been hoping and praying for an online extension to the Mii channel (kinda like a town to explore, people to chat to, maybe some form of Pictochat). Of course, the "RPG" bit probably wouldn't work for Mii-world, but I think it would still be awesome as just a communication game.
As for whether or not it would happen, I think its a cert. At some point in the future it will happen. It might be a long time coming, but I predict it will happen. Quote me on that when it does.

Ever notice how there are only MMORPGs and MMOFPSs? I'd like to see an MMO Platformer.
I had this idea for a game called "Super Mario Plumbing Acadamy" which was based on the GBC versions of Mario Golf and Tennis, which revolve around your own character working his way through the ranks in an effort to play against Mario himself in the end. Now imagine a premise like that, only with an actual Mario game instead of a sporty spin-off. You'd get to learn everything about Koopa-stomping, Pipe-warping, and Princess-saving. I guess since it's a "work-your-way-up" type of game, they'd have to add in a small amount of RPG elements, but it would predominantly be a platformer.
In addition to the game, I thought up a nifty anime series that shows how Mario became who he is by enrolling at the Plumbing Acadmy all those years ago. It would explain things like how he met Wario and why he's able to jump so high.
