If it is true then I guess Geno's chances are really higher than before. But in truth i more excited about that Golden Sun sequel on Wii rumour. That would be truly must have title.

This is fucking weird. This very morning I was wondering if Square would pick up the SMRPG mantle again and give the original a sequel. I was trying to think of the old SMRPG enemies as 3D characters at the time.
I am scared. ;D

Yes, yes, it's all fine and dandy, but what really sparks my interest, is this
Same as Pener.

The only sort of downside is that they are putting Final Fantasy characters into it. But the Golden Sun Wii, that sounds interesting!

FF characters aren't too bad. I they have them more across the FF universe, then I'm fine. I have no problem grinding to 80 to beat Sepheroth if I can see guys from 2-6 as well.
The GS one is juicy. I'm hoping 1 and 3 come true. The FF characters don't matter; just having SMRPG2 wins.

Oh my god, I can already see THAT happening. In other news, I hate SMRPG's enemy design.

Well.... there were already some references in there that weren't so blatantly obvous.
-Shaman enemy looked a lot like a Black Mage. -Three main bosses are Fire, Thunder and Water based. -Plenty of enemy spells had roots in the FF magic system. -Bahamutt was an enemy in Bowser's Keep. -Culex and the elemental crystals. -Equipable item system was almost verbatim. -Peach, being the only female, was the de facto White Mage. -Geno filled the role of shady badass who takes up the larger part of the plot's motivation. -Had a heart-wenching sub-plot in the form of Mallow finding his parents. -Whole plot structure, although given that it starts out as the standard Mario storyline, you could say it was almost a self parody. -Had it's fair share of bizarre/insane NPCs, like Booster. -Yoster Isle had to have some ties with Chocobo racing. -Battle system as a whole had a lot of similarities, such as elements and status anomalies. -First bar of the 2D FF victory theme is quickly played before the game's main victory theme.
All in all, I always thought of the game as a huge parody of the FF franchise at that point. If they add any of their own characters, they'll probably go the Mario Hoops route and only use generic races that appear in every game of the series. Either that or they'll use some original characters...

I'd really like it if they didn't use FF characters But I'm curious Ike-Mike, as to what you mean about SMRPG's enemies. I thought a lot (not all, but a lot) were really well designed. I feel like drawing some ;D

The bee doesn't look out of place. But that red guy with the yellow spikes? He looks more like a Mario enemy than most Mario enemies!

That knight looks like a Zelda enemy, but the others look like Mario baddies.

If Square wants to put in FF characters, let 'em. As long as it makes sense. I'd hate to see Cloud or Squall in there. But FF1 characters like Black Mage would be ok. After all, they were in Mario Hoops. As long as tehy make it! Isn't it confirmed that Camelot is making a Wii game? I hope its GS Wii! Another Mario sports game from them would be welcome as well,

I'm with Mike, the game was, and still is, very strange to me in that it doesn't feel like a Mario game. At all. I've gotten in many fights over the fact that I, personally, could not see it as a Mario game. No matter how many references it had, it tried too hard to make Mario into what Square thought worked. Frankly, I never once thought of the Mushroom Kingdom as being almost medieval or there being mole-people and frog-people and no-such-thing as a Koopa Troopa. And the enemies were just strange as all hell and the inclusion of Mallow was bizarre and it just was too... different. Very unfamiliar and almost like a FF-game with Mario characters. Paper Mario hits the nail on the head as far as "feeling like Mario" goes and hence I'm a far bigger fan of those games. And at least the Mario and Luigi games can explain away why they feel a bit odd at times ("lol, different kingdom/time/brothers?") That being said, I am still a major sucker for a lot of the Mario RPG original characters. Geno, Jonathan Jones, Smithy, Valentina and Dodo... It was remarkably clever in that regard, and that along with the simple FF-style battle system kept me playing the game over the years. I'd like to think the reason Square left Nintendo, though, was because they did such a shoddy job on Mario RPG outside of those two aspects (the overworld gameplay, enemy design, level design, etc.). It's what I've been telling myself for years EDIT: I swear, if those motherwizzleers put one goddamn FF7 character in the game I will pound their goddamn faces in >:/ I WOULD like to see a job-system implemented, though. And maybe more than 5 party members, like, I dunno, LUIGI?

The problem with putting Luigi in an RPG with Mario is how to make them different. It could be done now, with his electric moves and the Poltergust. Even in Mairo & Luigi they aren't that different. So its a matter of making it worth it to play as him, and not Bowser or Mallow, etc.
