This is actually old news from TGS, but I kept forgetting about it. It kind of flew in under the radar. Anyway, Tecmo mentioned that it's creating a fourth game in its survival-horror series Fatal Frame for the Wii. It also mentioned that Grasshopper Manufacture, Goichi Suda's studio which is currently working on No More Heroes, is involved in the project. No word on whether Suda 51, himself, is working on the game, tho. If you're not familiar with Fatal Frame, it was kind of a sleeper hit on the PS2 and X-Box. Its trademark is that you defend yourself from ghosts by taking pictures of them, based on the old superstition that cameras steal your soul. All three previous games were made for the PS2, and the first two were also ported to X-Box. This marks the series' first appearance on a Nintendo console, as well as its first "next-gen" installment. Source: 1up.com

Hm, could be interesting, and with Grasshopper on board, could be really bizarre, too. Be worth finding out more about.

New info!IGN reports that the new Fatal Frame game on the Wii is not a remake or side-story, but none other than the actual Fatal Frame 4. The game will be a Wii exclusive, and Nintendo, itself, is publishing the title. IGN goes on to state: As an interesting note, rumors have stated that the Big N has purchased the Fatal Frame name, and it looks like one of the industry's top horror franchises could now be a Nintendo exclusive from now on. On top of that, Goichi "Suda 51" is credited as a second director for the game. Wow! This does bare echoes of the Resident Evil deal made for the GameCube. While that deal bore some truly excellent games, like Resident Evil 4 and the REmake, their sales numbers were less than ideal. I hope this time things fare a lot better. Otherwise, it sounds great, and I can't wait to learn more about Fatal Frame 4!

Here is Famitsu's article that includes screenshots from the press conference. They look pretty good (for a Wii game), but I suspect that they're pre-rendered.

Wow! This sounds pretty interesting, especally because of Suda and Nintendo working on it. I've heard this franchise is supposed to be pretty scary. Also you should read this quote from the previous IGN FF4 article.

Haha, I'm gonna have to move this now I'll bet this game suddenly gets a whole lot more attention now that it's a second-party, Nintendo-published game. If Tecmo published it, it would just be another third-party game that Nintendo fans wouldn't pay any attention to. (Then again, Eternal Darkness went pretty much ignored at first, also.) How very strange! Fatal Frame a Nintendo game... When you think about it, Nintendo has a pretty good track record for horror games with the Resident Evils and Eternal Darkness. I wonder, tho, if they're trying to avoid the shenanigans that went on with Resident Evil 4. It was meant to be a GameCube exclusive, but it got ported to PS2 and PC, and the sequel is being developed only for the PS/360, so the franchise really slipped thru their fingers. I am glad to know that Nintendo is continuing to make an effort to secure third-party exclusives, even if they are going as far as to publish them second-party. However, these kinds of relationships blew up in Nintendo's face during the GameCube era--which you know I blame the fans for. So, you guys, think about buying some of these games, will ya?

I've been wondering when we'd get more info about this game. The current release date for Japan is July 31. Hopefully that means there will be a North American release just before the holiday season. In the mean time, I've entertained myself by reading the reactions of the fans about the game being a Wii exclusive. As you'd expect, people who own Wiis generally don't mind, and people who only have PS360s are upset. It's a typical fanboy/basher situation (kind of like when RE4 was supposed to be a GC exclusive). The owner of the fan site Beyond the Camera's Lens even took a survey with the intention of writing a blog post about it, but I don't think she ever did.

Well, it's only logical to use the Wiimote for a camera game, amirite?

The official Japanese site for the game is online, and it's actually on Nintendo's server, not Tecmo's. There's not much to look at yet, tho. Also, Famitsu's site has some clean screenshots. It's not often a Wii game (especially third or second party) has graphics this good. Also, the editors at IGN mentioned in one of their podcasts that Fatal Frame IV would be at E3 via Nintendo's booth. (I think I heard that Tecmo wouldn't be attending E3 this year.)

New previews from Next Gen and IGN, altho they don't actually reveal much. Strange considering that the Japanese release is at the end of this month. Could this game be suffering from Metroid Prime 3 syndrome, or are Nintendo and Tecmo deliberately keeping quiet to preserve the scariness of the game? Next Gen indicates that development for the game is taking place primarily at Grasshopper Manufacture, which contradicts an earlier report I read that said only Suda 51 and GM's music composer were involved. It also mentions that the controls will be similar to Resident Evil 4, but I don't know what they're basing this on since it doesn't seem to be a hands-on preview. IGN goes more into story detail, and also notes the conspicuous absence of information. But then, E3 is just around the bend.
