Like the previous Mario Kart titles, I really enjoy this game, and the controlling with the Wii Wheel works very well.
About the 5 new drivers, I'm a bit disappointed, since 3 of them are only alternate forms of other characters. But one after the other:
Baby Peach: Another baby. Too many babies, I'd like to have more unique characters instead.
Baby Daisy: Well, it wouldn't work with Baby Peach alone, so this was clear.
Rosalina: With her background story and mystical character and appearance, she's a great addition to the Marioverse. Very good choice!
Funky Kong: I played the whole DKC series where he appears, I like that ape someway. Also, if even a not so major character from the DK series like Funky can appear in the Mario series, (almost) every member of the Kong family could make it into the Mario spin-offs. Hope that Dixie Kong will join the roster in next Mario Kart, and King K. Rool, too.
Dry Bowser: Hum, not a baby, but still another alternate form, this time of Bowser. At least he has an interesting appearance. If he would replace Bowser in the Mario Party series and making the "true" Bowser playable, it would be great.
Instead of the four babies and Dry Bowser I'd like to see Petey Piranha, R.O.B., Koopa Paratroopa, and Shy Guy from the previous titles. Not that I would like them all that much, but at least they are unique characters and no alternate forms.
I also wish that, like the DK characters, WarioWare characters will appear some day in Mario spin-offs. Imagined that Mona could ride her scooter in Mario Kart Wii. But with the inclusion of the non-major DK character Funky Kong and the Wario Bike from the WarioWare series, it makes it even more likely that it will happen.
Nonetheless, one shouldn't complain too much which isn't in and enjoy what is in. Don't forget that the developers are also only humans and have a private life.

I agree, I find baby characters to be kinda useless seeing how they are just younger versions of characters we already have. But hey, I know someone who's gaga about baby characters so I shouldn't say anything...

However, Koopa Paratroopa is at least not supposed to be another self of Koopa Troopa - because there isn't the Koopa Troopa.

In that perspective you're right, but really, you jump on a Koopa Paratroopa, and what do you got?

You make a Koopa Troopa undead and you got Dry Bones!
What we need is Para-Bowser! Red Bull gives him WINGS!!!

My theory on why R.O.B. did not get in is because Nintendo seems to be giving him a cameo a year now. For the past few years this has happened and since he appears in SSBB, that ends up being his cameo for the year.

Maybe they just decided to keep Mario Kart for the Mario characters? (Which I guess means Diddy is now a Mario character.)

Sorry to nitpick, but isn't a Paratrooper just a regular Koopa Trooper with wings? ;D And you seriously want Petey Pirahna? *faints*

But I meant that it wouldn't be at least not another self of someone, since there isn't the Koopa Troopa. But you are right that it's still very similar. And I don't like Petey Piranha that much, but I would prefer him over the alternate selfs (babies and Dry Bowser) and extremly similar creatures (like Paratroopa), since he's a unique character. Okay, he descends from the Piranha Plants, but is still considerably different from the original enemy (unlike Paratroopa, who is really only a Troopa with wings).

Does anybody actually honestly truely give a shit who is a character in a Mario sport/kart/party game? Seriously?
Character selection in these games is always just a case of me going "cool" or "eh" when i unlock it, then 5 minutes later I don't care any more. Its not like Smash Bros where the characters come from a large variety of different sources so you're looking for particular ones, for me its just a case of being whatever characters are in are in. Bring on more babies. More Kongs. More variants. Who really cares?
... Petey should have been in though. And King Boo should be proper Luigi's Mansion King Boo not the goofy one they have.

Tingle would have been a good crossover character.

But this IS like Smash Bros., just confined within the Marioverse. How many people every game wish for Wart, Tatanga, Syrup, etc. etc.? It's no different than people wanting Little Mac, Pit, etc. for each Smash game, y'know?

I'd have liked to see an Eggplant Man or a Goomba playable myself.

Well from my philosophy on multiplayer Mario games, there are the undeniable eight and the fourteen musts. This is a pseudo analysis on character decisions.
The Eights are the most common in every Mario sport, party, ect... it is very rare to have the following unplayable:
MARIO: Well you can't have a game without him, 'nuff said.
LUIGI: If Mario's in it, so is Luigi. Going toghether like bread and butter, some may question if there is ever a reason for him not to be there if anyone else is. PEACH: Peach, formerly known as Toadstool in the US, is one of the most vital characters in the Mario series. Popular and functional, there was no reason to not have her playable since the beginning.
YOSHI: With instant popularity Yoshi has been in almost every Mario game in some shape or form since his debut.
TOAD: Toad is often included in these games but there has been times he's been left out. However, in games with a large selection of characters, he is almost guaranteed playable.
WARIO: Because of the success in his name, Wario was a very likely candidate as a playable character. And from that game started Wario's long line of appearing in Mario multiplayer games.
DONKEY KONG: Since Mario Kart 64 DK has been in practically every Mario sport or party. Originally planned to be Kamek, DK was most likely placed there due to his increased popularity from Rare's series.
BOWSER: Mario's arch nemesis and villian of mostly every game. If he's not playable, its probably because he's causing trouble.
Now for the rest of the fourteen musts. These characters are usually counterparts to the eight above, if one of the below is in the game, there are sure to be more.
DAISY: Daisy was the only other princess Mario had to rescue. Although she was only in one serious Mario game, she was finally made playable in Mario Tennis just so she could be Peach's doubles partner. Ever since she has undergone a serious makeover and has been given more character. There are even fans now!
BIRDO: Like Daisy, Birdo was made playable for the sake of being Yoshi's double partner. Birdo has had appeared in many games besides the one he/she debuted in. Being the most famous mini-boss from Super Mario Bros. 2, Birdo has appeared in many many Mario games in some shape or form.
TOADETTE: The first time a female Toad was recognized was in the various Mario RPGs. But specifically, the character Toadette first seen the light in Double Dash!!. Being liked by many, cute and popular. Toadette is still one of the most uncommon playable counterpart, below Diddy Kong! However she is still more common than some and has her own fan base.
WALUIGI: Created for the sole purpose of being a playable character and Wario's counterpart, Waluigi has ONLY been playable in Sports or party games. With this being familiar turf, Waluigi often appears in these games he was born from.
DIDDY KONG: When Rare left the coup, Nintendo was free to use the popular and unique character how the wished. DK often being alone in these games welcomed his best buddy in. Diddy has recently been popping up in all sorts of Mario gatherings and with no signs of stopping.
BOWSER JR: Created in Sunshine, Bowser Jr. was the perfect counterpart for Bowser. Unlike the the Koopalings, Bowser Jr showed true personality and was easier to remember than seven individuals. It would be very hard to determine one of the old seven kids to get the honor of being along side Bowser in the playable department. Bowser Jr rose above the rest.
