In some old NES games, the players are called 1UP and 2UP instead of just 1P and 2P. What does that mean? First user player and second user player?

I don't see what else it could stand for. One Useless Person? One Ugly Prat? One Unanimous President?

I didn't think it stood for anything. I thought it was just an old fashioned way of letting the players know who's turn it was.
"Player one, you're UP!"

I thought "1 UP" refers to how many lifes do you have, I don't remember it ever it being used for players.

In what game was 1-UP/2-UP was ever used? Kirby's Adventure (Remember the doll catching machine?) I can't tell but I can remember that, and "1UP" can be found in WarioWare: Touched - 9-Volt - Famicom or Button Masher.
