If I had a dollar for everytime I was close to buying Alex Kidd in Enchanted Castle on the Genesis for six dollars... let's just say I'd have enough to actually buy it. =)
Sega also had many underground titles that were loved by all who played them. You can't beat the Phantasy Star franchise, those were great games. I don't think anyone should hate Sega, because much like Nintendo, they actually care more about making good games than making money. That's how both Nintendo and Sega are.

Or at least they both realise you can only make money by making good games... at least in the long term. I know it seems a load of companies are making a lot of money off really lame games... but the quality is higher now (in third party terms) than it was in the NES and SNES days.
