I only played with one NES controller... but I can't remember which one. I think it's either the original or Max. I'll look up some images to see what rings a bell. EDIT: Yep, it was the original. Since that's the only one I used I'll vote for that one (I think I also have some other NES controllers, but sadly no (working) NES ).

I've only used the standard NES controller and the Advantage... and I prefer the standard.

I used Max, standard, Advantage, Zapper, Power Pad, and the Dog Bone is basically the shape of the SNES controller.
I like the Advantage, but only for arcade-style games. Quite good fun playing games like Elevator Action with it, a nice experience.
The NES Max is okay... but not my favorite... end of story.
So I vote for the standard one, I just find it to be the best so far.

Oh yeah... I do have a Zapper as well. Mint in box ;D
But as much as I love Gumshoe and Duck Hunt, the NES controller still wins.

The original - 2 made "Super Mario Bros. 3" a lot of fun to play, back in the day.
I have a Zapper as well, but it's use was limited to my copy of "Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt" - so the original controller wins hands down for me.
;D
