For some reason, I've been in a very nostalgic mood the last few days, and I've been going through a lot of old Nintendo Power magazines. So unless I find a way to control myself, we're likely see a handful of classic Nintnedo oriented posts from me. Like this one. Anyway, in going through my old NP's, I started to wonder what happened to puzzle games like The Adventures of Lolo, Kickle Cubicle and Fire 'n' Ice. The kind of puzzle games where your character is stuck in a room, and you have to come up with a very specific way of getting out. Those were brain busters. Most puzzle games now are Tetris-inspired, and sure, I love my Tetris, but where's Lolo 4? Do they still make "room" puzzlers?

Room puzzles have sort-of been sucked into the Action-Adventure series... making up much of the "dungeon" element of games like Zelda. Push box, get key, open door, push box, climb!
I picked up a great quality Mole Mania the other day. It's been driving me slowly mad. It's just SO bloody taxing!
But even the more recent Kirby games have a "room puzzle" feel to them sometimes.

Pushing a few blocks around in a Zelda game just isn't the same thing. I did discover that Hal released some Lolo-style games for Windows (in Japan) in '96 and 2000. home.nc.rr.com/charliebfinch/eggerland/win.htmOf course, that is already six years ago at this point. I guess Room Puzzles are just too rigid for modern gaming audiences.

How about Solomon's Key? Tang Tang in 2001 (GBA) was like that.
