Here are two questions which are actually related to each other.
1. Are the Shellcreepers officially the same foes as the Koopas (before they got their current name)? In the arcade version of Mario Bros., they got visibly "unshelled" when you hit the platforms under them and they got into their shells again (like the Koopas in SMW).
2. About 10 years ago, I played a version of the Mario Bros. Arcade in which you could stomp on a Shellcreeper and kick it when it burrowed inside its shell (the same mechanics as a Koopa). Was this version original, was it unoriginal, or did I drink too much Moo Moo Milk?

1. I think it's safer to say that the Shellcreepers are the inspiration for the Koopa Troopas. They are probably the same, but even in Japan the names are different (Shellcreeper and Nokonoko). There's no straight answer.
2. In the original arcade, and SOME other versions featuring Shellcreepers (not the standard NES issue though) when you hit a Shellcreeper it rolls over onto its back, and after a while it jumps out of the shell and flips it back over before jumping back in again.
But I haven't played one where you can kick the shells to knock out other enemies (like you can with a Koopa Troopa). I'd say that was the Moomoo Milk.
But Shellcreepers, on the whole, are Koopa Troopas that you can't jump on. Which is why they have been replaced with Spinies in later versions. And after a while Nintendo brought back their ability to pop out of their shells again.

Thanks for the response.
I'm sticking to the Moomoo Milk theory, but if this is a useful fact, I played it at Miami (IDK... Maybe a piracy target at that time?).

I could be wrong, but I sort of remember being allowed to kick around turtle shells in the Mario Bros. battle game in Super Mario All-Stars.

The main enemies were Spinies, but occasionally a Koopa Troopa would pop out and you could kick the shell around. (That was a pretty cool way of attacking an unsuspecting opponent!) However, I don't think the Troopa actually popped out of the shell (a la Super Mario World). What about Mario Clash?

In Mario Clash you had to jump on them to get their shells and then throw the shells at other enemies.
I should get that game... and more batteries for my Virtual Boy.

There was this supermarket not so far from my house, which had like 10 units of Virtual Boy in stock, and nobody bought it through the years. They were there until about year 2001 but at that time I didn't have my own money to buy it, and when I got enough money, they disappeared *growls*. Anyway, my poor mind probably mixed the Mario Bros. arcade with the battle mode of SMB3.

Mario Clash is such a fun game. Challenging, too, especially when the snakes start laying eggs.
