This here makes me really oddly upset. I liked the real life ads in Wave Race 64 (and the sequel). I think my memories have just been spoiled. *cries* Considering the original name (as listed on Nintendo's N64 game PDF "Wave Race 64 Kawasaki Jet Ski"

When did it first strike?
Anyways, this is kind of sad. It's also surprising that this game came out over ten years ago! It feels like just yesterday...

When did it first strike? Anyways, this is kind of sad. It's also surprising that this game came out over ten years ago! It feels like just yesterday... Not me. I've been playing the GC version so, to me, the original does feel old. The GC version features as-oldish-as-64 graphics, though, making me rather disappointed... anyway, it's just the cheapest game I've got, so there's no loss. And it's not surprising that VC games are being modified. And frankly, I feel that none of these moves to "revive" the classics can give me a "classical" feel since the days of FC->SFC improvements. Famicom Mini is so unreal for FC games to run on a lesser system (trust me, GBA is less capable than FC/NES in some ways), 64 games on GC feels odd with a different controller, and so on. So... just to be honest, I won't really bother much with VC, unless it has games I really like or I just have to download them for some reasons (like if it's MP2 or MP3 (I won't bother with 1, it's just as bad as 8) that I don't have and thus PC emulation or just using the 64 can't solve the problem). Given I'm going to get a Wii, that is.

To answer TvEye:
Zelda II had the red flashes removed. Kid Icarus had the cheat code passwords removed (much to the chagrin of players) Tecmo Super Bowl had the player names removed. Punch Out was modified before it even hit the VC, it was originally Mike Tysons Punch Out!
EDIT: Mario Kart 64 no longer has ghost mode and all N64 games had L and Z switched.

Hm, I didn't know Zelda II had anything removed. Otherwise, you're spot on (except it was Tecmo Bowl...Super Bowl is likely on its way, though). Mario Kart 64 also lost its Ghost saving, and Rumble has been stripped from games that had it on the N64 (Paper Mario, Zelda: OoT, F-Zero X, Star Fox 64).
As for the ads, the reasoning makes sense. Why pay Kawasaki to renew the license for a VC repeat of an old N64 game? It'd cost Nintendo more money than it's worth. It may damper the memories a bit, but if the gameplay is unchanged, then hey, it's all good in my eyes.

Hm, I didn't know Zelda II had anything removed. Yes, when Link dies the screen used to flash red and black really quickly. Flashing red is one of the largest known triggers for epileptic seizures, and there are now screen-display laws that say no more than three red flashes per second. I've read up about it ;D

lol Yeah, I suppose that's a good reason to tone it down. No need to knock kids into seizures.

Anyone remember that certain episode of Pokemon? The certain episode with Porygon? You know, Pikachu destroyed a missile...red and yellow flashed everywhere...dozens of kids fell to epileptic attacks...
Anyways, it's good they toned down Zelda II. We wouldn't want anyone getting seizures

Anyone remember that certain episode of Pokemon? The certain episode with Porygon? You know, Pikachu destroyed a missile...red and yellow flashed everywhere...dozens of kids fell to epileptic attacks... This is the one !WARNING CAUSES SEIZURES! Photosensitive Seizure Warning A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in videos. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these "photosensitive epileptic seizures" while watching videos.
These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects.
Immediately stop watching and consult a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Parents should watch for or ask their children about the above symptoms - children and teenagers are more likely than adults to experience these seizures.
The risk of photosensitive epileptic seizures may be reduced by taking the following precautions:
- Watch in a well-lit room
- Do not watch when you are drowsy or fatigued
If you or any of your relatives have a history of seizures or epilepsy, consult a doctor before watching. linkThis even gave me a headache so watch out.
