What's the difference between Kirby's Avalanche and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine? Besides the obvious being Kirby and Dr. Robotnik. I looked at Wikipedia and saw that they are just like Puyo Puyo.

They were both basically adaptions of Puyo Puyo. There is no difference in the actual games. Kirby's Avalanche wasn't released outside of Japan (though I'm not sure about Mean Bean Machine - it featured characters from the American cartoon show, so I'm guessing not).
And, of course, one was for the Mega Drive/Genesis and one was for the SNES. So same game, different decorations, different systems, primarily for non-Japan markets.

Oh, okay, thanks FryGuy. So they have the same game modes, nothing added or subtracted from each other.

You mean it wasn't released in Japan. And no, Mean Bean Machine wasn't either. Thanks to the radically different cartoon designs (and different name for Eggman), Japanese fans wouldn't have even realised it was connected to Sonic at all.

As NWR sums it up rather nicely...
Mean Bean Machine can use the Wii Remote for play (and others controllers), Kirby's Avalanche can only use the Classic Controller and Gamecube controller.

That's strange... I guess it's just because the SNES has so many more buttons... But it's not like those buttons added any functionality that Mean Bean Machine didn't have.

Actually, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine DID eventually get a Japanese release in the compliations Sonic Mega Collection & Sonic Mega Collection Plus as "Dr. Eggman no Mean Bean Machine"
For the Virtual Console, the Japanese got Puyo Puyo Tsu for the Sega Genesis in lieu of Kirby's Avalanche or Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.
