Welcome to the NinDB Cameo forum. If you believe you have found a cameo that hasn't been submitted on NinDB, or you would like to supply a missing screenshot, please read this first.
I believe I have found a cameo. How do I submit it?
In order to submit a cameo to NinDB, either post it in this forum or send an email to fryguy64@hotmail.com (however, I will simply repost it in this forum). Include as much detail as you can remember so that others can check and confirm it. Ideally, include a image (screenshot, photo) to prove it.
If you found the cameo on another website, make sure to say which website you found it on. You will still be credited for submitting it to NinDB, but the original site will also be credited.
Please check if there is already a topic about the game in the cameo board. If there is, then please post your cameo in that topic. However, if it's for an old game, and the topics are old and hidden somewhere in the forum archive, then it is OK to create a new topic.
Please read the topic to make sure the cameo has not already been submitted. However, if it has already been submitted, then you can help by confirming it or adding additional information missing from the original submission. Additional helpful information will be credited to you.
Most of all... check NinDB to make sure the cameo isn't already on the website! If you submit a cameo that's already on the site, you will be ignored. If you create a new topic to do this, it will be deleted. This of course doesn't count for cameos that have only just been posted.
I want to submit a missing screenshot.
NinDB is missing a lot of screenshots of confirmed cameos, although some still need to be added to the site. If you want to help out by sending in screenshots, then that's great.
However, photos or screenshots of a particularly poor quality will not be used. They can sometimes be helpful for proving a cameo is real or not, but they will not be used on the website.
How do I take screenshots?
The best way to take screenshots of home console games is to use a Capture Card or an emulator. For handhelds it's more difficult, and emulation is usually the only way to get good screenshots.
Please be aware that playing Nintendo games through emulators is basically software piracy.
What about video?
Video can also be useful, and has become a viable option with HD Flash video appearing in recent years. If you want to upload a video to YouTube or a similar video hosting service and link through to it, we are happy to use screenshots from that.
NinDB may consider a better use of video in the future... when NinDB can afford a better computer
What is a Cameo?
At its most basic level, a cameo is a guest appearance of a character from one series in another game series.
- Mario appears as the referee in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
- Donkey Kong Jr. appears in Smash Ping Pong
- Samus and Link both appear in Super Mario RPG
However, objects, music, or even whole levels can make a cameo appearance in another game:
- The Legend of Zelda flute music appears in Super Mario Bros. 3.
- Marth's Falchion Sword from Fire Emblem appears in Kirby Super Star
- Mario Kart 64's Rainbow Road stage appears in F-Zero X.
Sometimes Nintendo hardware and Nintendo staff make cameo appearances too:
- The Pocket Pikachu and NES are items in Animal Crossing.
- R.O.B. the robot appears in Mario Kart DS
- Satoru Iwata is the shopkeeper in WarioWare: Smooth Moves
In some cases, if a character makes a reference to another game in their speech, or if something is inspired by another series, then this also counts on NinDB:
- Various Mario character names appear in Super Punch-Out!! high score board
- Kirby's Sword ability gives him Link's hat and the Master Sword from the Zelda series.
- Malon and Ingo in Ocarina of Time are based on Mario and Luigi.
Do you include cameos in third-party games?
Many companies throw in homages to Nintendo games, but these are not included on NinDB, as third party games do not feature.
In some cases, Nintendo will officially license its characters to a third party for use in a game. For example, Super Punch-Out!! is an unlockable game in the EA Sports title Fight Night Round 2[/b], and you can even play as a 3D version of the Super Punch-Out!! boxer in the main game.
Cameos such as this will eventually find a home somewhere on NinDB, but they do not have one yet.
What about non-Nintendo cameos in Nintendo games
Nintendo games referencing non-Nintendo games is extremely rare. It usually happens when a second-party references games that appeared before they became a second-party.
For example: HAL Laboratory's Kirby enemies Lololo and Lalala were originally the hero and damsel in distress of the Adventures of Lolo series. Many other Kirby enemies also originated in this series.
These cameos will be judged on a case-by-case basis.
