Am I going crazy or is this an Animal Crossing Cameo in We Love Katamari?!

I think Fryguy once said something about the Gyroids being a Japan-thing and not something created by Nintendo.
Also,
I LOVE KATAMARI!

Yeah, I imagine the Animal Crossing Gyroids are actually a reference to something from Japanese culture, rather than the other way around, if you get what I mean But I'm tempted to start finding out exactly what.

haniwa are clay figures dating from OLD OLD Japanese culture, usually found near ancient burial mounds. gyroids/cactuars/anything else with that creepy face and pose are just references to the haniwa, and aren't ripping each other off or anything. on a side note, the big clay dolls in We Love Katamari (which you can see likenesses of in games like Dynamite Headdy, Goemon, and even Darkstalkers) are the same deal.
and that's the only thing I remember from that Japanese art history class!

Ok, I did a bit of reading up on it and apparently "haniwa" was some sort of grave stone thing in ancient Japan.... Though, I can't seem to find any referance to them every being called anything like "gyroid". I also have no idea why they would be used in Animal Crossing in such a way.
Seriosly though, Fryguy.... you could probably do a whole section of referances to Japanese culture in Nintendo games.
