OR... Have different Adventures selectable in Adventure Mode. Then characters could have their own adventure, which would be cool, but you could also use other characters for that adventure. Maybe you'd have to complete each adventure with the 'proper' character before others could play it.

They could try and weave in some kind of story, where the character is playing through their own world and end up in a battle with a boss character (perhaps all unlockable later on) before being sucked into the world of Smash Bros., where they have to then play the lands of other characters (perhaps in a Mega Man style teleporting door system)... before finally taking on the Master Hand or something.
This will be easy for the platformers, such as Mario, Kirby, Yoshi, DK, Metroid, etc... while the others would let you run around platformer worlds at an angle you have never seen before... such as Earthbound, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, etc...
Perhaps by completing the game with each character on Normal or Hard difficulty will be how you unlock your enemy characters, with other friendly characters unlockable in others ways (each also with their own world!)
Ahh, bliss.

How come nobody mentioned story mode?

Because Adventure Mode kinda is SSBM's Story Mode. It's just not much of a story

Having a story of playing in the character's own world before fighting other people may be a good idea.
How about events and items?
Events that I can think: As Bowser, destroy all Mario family members!!!!! (Assume that Wario will appear) Destroy Mario!!!!
Items: Gravitator from WarioWare Twisted!: Change the gravitation of the stage for about 30 degrees for a while. Vaccum (Luigi Mansion): Not to swallow enemies, but to release fire or ice, which means it is a combination of the Fire Flower and multiple Freezers! Feather from Super Mario World: use it to fly for a while. Flight Warp Star: use it to fly - but it can be destroyed easily!

Now that's Rare's off on their own, Nintendo will have to find new motion-sensor bombs and cloaking devices. Maybe Geist will have something Failing that, a Boo would make a good cloaking device

Maybe making this ability an item is a good idea. Motion Sensor bombs... Can't think of anything like that. Should Nintendo sell Rare? (Comments: I'm positive with that. I've heard of rumors like HAL didn't add much DK stuff in SSBM was due to it didn't want to have Rare involved.)

What do you mean should Nintendo sell Rare? That questioned applied in 2001 -- but now its already happened! Rare are gone, the work for Microsoft now.

I WANT Rare to be involved. They rocked! Their DK games were the best!

But Rare is hardly doing anything nowadays, so it's not much of a loss I guess.

For me, its hard to judge just whether the loss of Rare was good or bad. Sure, at times like this, when they haven't released anything for a few years, the are unneccesary, but its much harder to say that when you have, say, Perfect Dark 0, Conker or even (I hope they are working on) Banjo Threeie.

I like the look of the new Conker game. It looks like the best thing Rare have done since... the last Conker game. Shame I don't plan on getting an X-Box.
I think the next SSB could include some Master Hand-style non-playable boss characters. You could face a different final battle depending on who you are. Andross for Fox, Giygas for Ness, Ridley for Samus... Dedede or Marx for Kirby... stuff like that. I think that'd be a nice touch.

Yes, but it would be an even NICER touch if you could unlock those enemy characters, right? Right?
Young Link... Rare has gone... long gone... accept it and move on. Still, funny how they've released loads more games on Game Boy Advance than they have on X-Box. I suspect Nintendo made the right move there.
I would like to see more new DKC games being released, but Jungle Beat was absolute awesomeness on toast, and King of Swing is also a great little game (but it kills those fingers). DK is still alive and well... it's just he's not done much platforming lately. And Mario VS. Donkey Kong is pretty cool also. I love Mario's soundbytes!!
"Here we go again... again!" "Come back here, you big monkey!!"
Ahh bliss.

What I was really trying to say is "should Nintendo sell Rare at that time?"
I was actually positive on this, seeing things like Diddy appear in Mario games...

See my above post for the answer.
What has Ninty done with that money, anyway? Have they done smart things like investing in new 2nd parties / helping out developers, or have they just bough some new ivory backscratchers?
