In the Japanese version of Paper Mario (Mario Story), the character Minh T. (the Toad in Toad Town Garden) is named Lip. Lip is a character from another one of Intelligent System's games, Panel de Pon.
Both characters play a role involving flowers, so I think this is more a cameo than a coincidence.

Definatly probable. Intelligemnce System like to refference themselves. They did in Paper Mario: TYD (With Fire Emblem) so I'd say it's likely. Like to hear what the big man thinks.

Interesting, especially as Intelligent Systems is involved with both. I shall investigate this further. Do you have a source for the Japanese names of characters? PS. A huge Lip fan! You don't see that every day!

There might be a list on Gamefaqs, but I'm not so sure. I now searched all around for a screenshot, but I ended up taking one from a Youtube video. If I had a copy myself, I would've had a better quality screenshot/ PS. A huge Lip fan! You don't see that every day! And proud of it too! ;D The thing is, the character Furil is in my avatar and signature, Lip's daughter, from the GCN version. But I'm still a huge Lip fan nonetheless!

Furil looks exactly the same as Lip. What's up with that? You think if Lip gets into SSB, they'll make her look older since she has a daughter now? Or will they just use Furil instead?

I disagree with the "TTYD refering to FE" thing. It only occurs in the English/European language version. In the original, that Toad said "Super Mario Bros". So I take it more as NoA's doing than INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS' own reference.

Not exactly the same. Furil's hair is fluffier than Lip's. Also, instead of just flowers, Furil wears gems with flowers in them. If Lip makes it into Brawl (which I've been hoping for), I don't think think they'd make her any older. I they would keep her design the same.

Well... they did give a bit of an update to all the characters who have been confirmed from Brawl, and Marth has his "older" design from the second half of Fire Emblem III, and lookit what they did to Pit, even.

Pit's one s probably based on the ending of Kid Icarus, where Palutena-sama gave him an adult body. By saying "adult" they really mean a 15~17 teenager, as with most Nintendo franchises. (We call 26-year-old Mario a big uncle, right?)
And look closely, Panepon characters are DIFFERENT in original Panel de Pon and nintendo puzzle Collection! Don't argue with that, especally Fry like you did some years before! Never make a fan of INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS mad, kay?

Yes, but as YoungLink said, the designs do have their bases. We never get to officially see Lip in the second generation, nor do I remember even a mention of her.

No, not at all. You're right, in Nintendo Puzzle Collection Lip and Co are not mentioned at all. The "they're desendents of Lip and Co" thing is stated in magazines and game guides, but how they're related is unmentioned in-game. Look into Wikipedia for more details.

Nice to see a Panel de Pon fan.
And that can be very very true. And awesome. I love Intelligent Systems so if Minh T. really is called Lip over in the Land of the Rising Sun... that's just badass.
