I thought for sure this was already old news, but I didn't see it listed on the site and couldn't find any mention of it in the forum, so let's give it a try! "The Key" in Pikmin 2, the treasure you collect to unlock challenge mode (and subsequently need to collect over and over again within challenge mode) is totally an exact replica of the keys that unlock secret exits in Super Mario World. the ship even says something about it looking familiar or nostalgic or something when you collect it, but I can't remember the specifics. :x w-create.com/~bisqwit/nesvideos/smbtricks/smw_keyjump.gifimages.wikia.com/pikmin/images/0/01/Thumb_thekey.jpg

Yes, we had a great big discussion about the Pikmin 2 cameos when the game came out. There's a lot of definite cameos, some not so definite, and then some which are verging on pure speculation.
The key, unfortunately, is one of those.

I don't know! it seems pretty definite to me, since it's a pretty uncommon (and very very impractical!) shape for a key.
I would tend to think, given that all of the other treasures are super-realistic in nature, the key's super-cartoonish appearance is an intentional callback.

The problem is it looks just like a regular key. I'll took in the description. It might shed some light on this.

Hmm... it does look exactly like the SMW key, and I've never, ever seen a key that looks quite like that anywhere else. I seem to remember it alluding to something in the description too, but since it's been a long time since I played... I'm not going to trust that memory.

The Ship describes it as:
"This shape... I have encountered it somewhere before... No, I must be mistaken... Yes, I am mistaken. Thoughts like these strike all who see this cabalistic form. You can feel its immense power!"

Well, why else would it say it looks familiar?

You can feel its immense power!" Sounds like exactly what I said Sure, it looks familiar, but it's just a key! Maybe someone at NoA had the same thought And yes, the Phanto was horrible! I still get a twinge of nerves when running from that thing in some of those levels!

Phantos were almost as bad as Metroids. I remember some of my earliest frights in gaming were Phantos. Maybe I should give them a spot on my Enemy feature.

Phantos, I've hated them so much, make me cry at night...
