I was just listening to the newest "Not the 1-Up Show" podcast where they talk with one of the designers who worked on the original Star Fox/Wing for the SNES. According to him, the game originated as a second sequel (third installment, if you will) to the Star Glider games Argonaut made way back in the day for multiple non-Nintendo 80s consoles. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StargliderWatching the gameplay, esp. of Starglider 2, you can definitely see the resemblance.

About a week or two ago, someone posted a link ot a video about FX Chip and Star fox's develpment and it talked about this. X was also a major influence, IIRC. But yeah, Starglider 2 looks quite a bit like Corneria in Star Fox 1.

^ Yeah that was me. It's this thread in the Classic Nintendo segment of the forum. Here is a link to the Super FX chip documentry. A part of the documentry talks about the cancelled Starfox 2 game for the SNES. It's even talks about the Arwing walking mode and say how some of the team who made that went on to develop Super Mario 64.

Yeah, one of the Argonaut team famously programmed Mario's stretchy Mario 64 face ;D I am curious to see if there's any further resemblances between Starglider and Star Fox. Originally being developed as a sequel and then being changed is one thing... but if there's links between them then we are in cameo territory!

One of the levels shown of Star Glider 2 is heavily reminsicant of Corneria. The towers with... spnning things on them and the robots carrying girders both appear in it. The video is in the link Da Robot posted above.
