It's been announced that Contra 4 is in the works for the DS and is scheduled for release later this year. All that's been revealed is that it will take advantage of both screens and will support multi-player. No images have been released, but it's reported to a be a 2D game. The Contra series has been hit-or-miss for the last decade or so. I'll be interested to see what direction this one takes.

Considering the developer's past "successes"... I'm pretty sure this won't be the saviour of the series. I wish these big publisher/developers would stop farming out their most treasured IP to small, unproven (or proven to suck) developers. Or at the very least I wish they didn't announce who was developing it until THEY were convinced it was going to be any good

Agreed. Contra was one of the "big ones" back in the 8- and 16-bit days, but it got tossed by the wayside pretty quickly. AFAIK, the only decent Contra game to come out since 1994's Hard Corps was Shattered Soldier on the PS2 in 2002. According to Wikepedia, it was directed by Nobuya Nakazato who also directed Contra III and Hard Corps. It'd be nice of Contra could thrive on handheld systems like Castlevania is, but Konami just doesn't seem too interested in making the effort. It's also strange that "Contra 4" is the working title. I always thought Hard Corps was supposed to be Contra IV. I guess it's not too late for them to change it to something like Contra: Dangerous Shooting or Dire Straits or some that starts with D and S.

Eh, I was pleased to hear a new Contra game is in the works, so I'll remain cautiously optimistic about it. You never know...could be good. Could be bad just as easily...but still...

Maybe we'll see some cameo's from the developer's earlier titles. ;D EDIT:Dang, I just took a stroll though the Developer's website, I wouldn't trust these people with making nil. It's also strange that "Contra 4" is the working title. I always thought Hard Corps was supposed to be Contra IV. I guess it's not too late for them to change it to something like Contra: Dangerous Shooting or Dire Straits or some that starts with D and S. I recall Zelda TP's working title to be The Legend of Zelda 2, so what's so strange anyway?

I recall Zelda TP's working title to be The Legend of Zelda 2, so what's so strange anyway? If that's true, then what was Zelda II's working title? Zelda 1¼? Game companies have strange numbering systems.

I thought it was Wind Waker 2.

It was Wind Waker 2. Not LoZ2. That wouldn't make sense.

I didn't see anything about a 4-player mode. The game looks good, tho. The bold colors almost give it a Gunstar Heroes vibe. I was also glad to read that the developers want to make it at least as difficult as the original NES game. Hopefully WayForward is just one of those developers that's never really had a chance to fully spread its wings.

I didn't see anything about a 4-player mode. It's on the second scan, below the largest screenshot. "Classic, hard-core 2-D gameplay meets four-player dual-screen action. Gaming doesn't get much better than this."

Here's the latest news on Contra 4. According to Joystiq, the game will include the NES versions of the original Contra and Super C! Among other goodies, there will also be five unlockable characters that apparently include a Probotector! I can't wait for this game! I wonder if any of the characters from Hard Corps will be in there.

Alright, that equals an instant sell. Contra is awesome, and I have not had a chance to play Super C, so I will reserve this ASAP. ...if it's coming out in a time I can afford it, anyway. November 13th...maybe. Maybe I can afford this. It'll roll over on the next bill...sold!

Wow...three games in one. A definite buy for me. I always loved Contra, ad with all these characters, I'm also hoping for WiFi!
