Believe it or not, there's a Sonic RPG in the works for the DS. The good news is that Sega is outsourcing development of the game to BioWare, which is known for RPG's such is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights, Balder's Gate, and the upcoming Mass Effect for the X-Box 360. This carries slight echoes of Nintendo's partnership with SquareSoft for development of the original Super Mario RPG. There's definitely some potential here. Article from Next Gen.

This is crazy and bizarre. I'm not sure what to think yet, but I'm going to be cautiously optimistic till further notice.

WTF came to mind first. Only problem is I didn't care for Bioware's RPGs. I like my RPGs Japanese.

If they keep the blue-sky atmosphere of the games, and don't lose sight of the fact they are using the Sonic franchise, then this could have potential. But the Sonic franchise has become so bogged down in depressed, flawed characters of late that I'm more concerned it will be too dark.
Especially with a legacy like that. Blue-Sky Gaming! It's where it should be at.

If it was Sonic Team behind the game, I would know it would be a flop. With Bioware, I'm cautiously optimistic. Still, Sonic seems like a harder series to translate to an RPG than Mario.

Now, here's two thoughts: 1. It's gonna be a dark RPG if it's done traditional or even Knights of the Old Republic style (more likely it will play like the latter than the former), if only because the characters and the series are more "mature" now and have a weird emo streak going.
2. The other thought is that this is a MMORPG. You design your own furry Sonic character and you're off into a giant Sonic World. That would be the end-all, be-all for Sonic fans. I think Sega could rest on its laurels and never have to work again if a game like that came about (in other words, hardcore Sonic fans are friggin crazy)

IGN's Craig Harris has interviewed BioWare's President, Greg Zeschuk, and CEO, Ray Muzyka, about the Sonic RPG. Naturally, being so early, no real details are revealed. Still, Greg and Ray show their enthusiasm and indicate their intentions, as well as discuss what it's like to develop for the DS. I'm impressed that, two-and-a-half years later, developers still consider the DS's features to be innovative and exciting.

Which is why I'm worried about Sonic Rush Adventure. If they can screw up a 2D Sonic then they are pretty f-ed. Mario&Sonic at the Olympic Games is done by a development team in Europe right?

Sonic RPG? Sounds like fun. People don't give enough credit to Sonic Team for trying, Adventure 2 wasn't absolutely horrible (it didn't live up to advertising though) and Heroes was still a 3 star game in my opinion. I can't comment on Rush other than music sucked though.

I think some over exagerate how bad the games suck. it's always the 3D ones, not the 2D(they stay pretty good). The thing I fear is Dimps isn't doing the game. From what I've seen and heard, it shouldn't change much,,,,,,,,hopefully.

I'm skeptical on the concept of a Sonic RPG, because I know they'll use all the characters they've made so far and then add a bunch more (since RPGs are numerous when it comes to required characters). Oy vey. That, and Sonic has turned me off almost completely by this point; I'm only interested in Mario & Sonic Olympics because of the whole Mario aspect.
Also, Sonic Rush's soundtrack is awesome. It was composed by awesome mixmaster Hideki Naganuma: this is the man who, FYI, made about 70% of the songs in both Jet Grind Radio and Jet Set Radio Future combined, as well as all the music in SmileBit's last venture in video gaming before the SegaSammy merger, Ollie King. Granted, Rush isn't Naganuma's best work, but you'll change your tune once you hear songs like Teknopathetic, Like a Butterfly, Sneakman or Humming the Bassline.

Like, how NPCs were in Super Paper Mario. Totally different. I think the game will be good. It's not made by Sonic Team, but Bioware who is actually good. I still probobly won't like it. I hated KOTOR.

I just hope the music in this game (sonic RPG) is as good too. I mean seriously, you can't have a sonic game without good guitars and rock music...can you?

^ I prefer the music from the original 2D Sonic games (as opposed to the 3D games). It sounded more like 80's synth pop rather than 80's guitar rock, but it fit the surrealistic art and level design in the games.
