Today is the first anniversary of the 3PS. One year ago today (19 November), I posted the first feature to coincide with the US release of the Wii. (So, today is also the first anniversary of the Wii.) I thought I’d commemorate the occasion with a quick retrospective of how I got myself into this mess.
The seed was planted in a thread called “POST YOUR GAMECUBE COLLECTION” that was started in January 2006. I whipped up some quick statistics based on the small sample, and I noted the ratio between first- and third-party games. That led to same brief rants on the poor state of Nintendo’s third-party support, and I placed the responsibility for it on the shoulders of the fans. (I think maybe this post was the catalyst.)
At the end of the month, I went ahead and started a thread called “Third Party ‘Cube Games,” hoping it would spark more discussion and interest in third-party games. It didn’t. A little over a month later, in response to mention of the post-holiday game drought, I revived the thread with the intention of featuring a “Third Party ‘Cube Game of the Week.” After initial good reactions, I changed the name of the thread and continued posting about a third-party ‘Cube game every week for the next 37 weeks.
I retired the GameCube version of the thread one week before the release of the Wii with the intention of continuing the feature for the newer console and the DS. Thanks to Fry’s support, it immediately became an official feature on the NinDB. I coined the title “3rd Party Showcase” with the abbreviation “3PS” so that it would look a little bit gimmicky, and thus stand out more. That was the beginning of the feature as you see it today.
I continued with the once-a-week regimen until mid-June when I decided that trying to find filler-titles was compromising the purpose of the feature. So, I started holding off until games were available that I felt were really worth writing about.
With the great success of the Wii and the current busy holiday season, as well as the more relaxed pace of the 3PS, I’m hoping to have plenty of great third-party games to write about over the next several months. I want to thank my readers and my fellow forum members for their support, and thanks to Fry for putting my cheesy writing on his site. I hope it has helped some of you awaken to the wonderful reality of third-party gaming on Nintendo’s systems.
