In an unexpected move, it was announced today that Activision and Vivendi will be merging to form Activision Blizzard. With their total combined assets, the company will be one of the biggest third-party publishers in the business. What does this merger mean? Will we see Warcraft on the Wii? Old Sierra-style adventure games on the DS? Who knows!

And this comes less than three days after EA's CEO, John Riccitiello, stated that there wasn't a lot of opportunity in the games industry for future mergers ( source). I guess he spoke too soon.

Madness I say. What does this mean? I have no idea. Beyond Blizzard, none of them do anything amazing from my recollection.

I was shocked when I read this yesterday. This was quite the insane merger...Activision just acquired World of Warcraft to their Guitar Hero. Largest third party status is solidified. As I commented at the other board I go to, what can EA do to counter this? I joked that they can merge with Atari/Infogrames, despite their financial issues, but seriously, EA is now going to have to find some other way of catching up to be the leadest third party. Let's hope it doesn't involve more Pac Man-esque company gobbling.
