Hah, no, it was a good two years or so before the Fleetway comic started. Though I finally got my own Mega Drive around that time, and I did love the comics. As for Nega, I should think they'd be able to come up with something better than an alternate universe palette swap. That shit was already done to death in the Archie comics. Ah, maybe that's why. I've never read an Archie comic, and from what I've heard of them, I don't really care to. It was a new one on me, and sure, it was incredibly clichéd (as is much of the series)... but in a weird way, I kinda like that.

The Archie comics seem to have upward and downward slumps. At the moment I can't tell if it's in "Up" mode or "Down" mode. XD

It's a stark comparison to the Mario fans, who tend to be fairly open minded and embrace new concepts. Well another difference is that Mario characters don't usually have cliche personalities, dark pasts, or lame dialogue. They are usually fun enjoyable characters, with lovable personalities, and unique designs. Look at Wario, he's a fat, greedy, jerk who picks his nose. He's hilarious! How can you not love him? The only exception to this rule I'd say is Rosalina who does not have a unique design and has a depressing past. But that's forgivable as she won't appear again for another hundred years. I think emotional deep characters are great, but they should only appear once in a game series, otherwise their impact gets worn out. Shadow's sadistic past was great for one game, but now it has been dragged out in nearly every game since. It went from meaningful, to just plain annoying.

They are usually fun enjoyable characters, with lovable personalities, and unique designs. And that has what to do with gameplay? I wasn't talking about characterization. But, to be honest, I much prefer the characterization in the Sonic series. Every single character has a very distinct personality with their own little quirks and flaws, of the Mario series' main characters, only Luigi, Wario and Bowser really have this. Nobody else really shows much personality at all. Though this is a gripe I have with a lot of Nintendo's series, not just Mario. Their heroes tend to be fairly barren when it comes to personality.

I liked the characterization myself, but after SA2 they started to flanderize a bit. By the end of SA1 and SA2, Tails was more independent, Eggman was more sympathetic, Knuckles was more romantic and less isolated, Amy was also more independent (and actually had the potential to be less annoying) and Shadow made a heroic sacrifice. I kinda figured this would only developed further in the next game, but no... come Heroes we were right back where we started.

Knuckles has become a bit pointless lately. I really wish they'd do with him what they do with Shadow and not put him in every damn game. In the first season of Sonic X, Knuckles only showed up once every few episodes. And that worked great.

Good thing that neither Knux nor Shads are appearing in Unleashed, then.

Don't be so sure. They may make their way in somehow.

We'll see. But so far the only game since his debut that didn't have Knuckles in it was Rush Adventure, so I'm not hopeful.

The characters appearing are fine, so long as they aren't all playable. I'd settle for it just being Sonic and Tails from here on. One runs faster, the other can fly. That's all you really need.
Either way, it would be cool to see some older characters make a cameo in some way, like Mighty the Armadillo being a non-player character who races Sonic a la Cosmic Mario, or Fang the Sniper as a boss character (again).

Mighty even looks like sonic. And I think Fang might be banned unless they gave him that extra finger.

Extra finger? What? Fang's a bad guy/hired gun anyway, why would it matter if he looks like a Yakuza?

Fang hasn't appeared since Uekawa took over the art direction, so he'd get an overhaul anyway. XD
