This is very interesting. My opinion though is that if you don't time it correctly then you just fall off instead of jumping farther.

:o COOL! I hope you can also press the grab button to lift your opponents from the top (I.E. Doki Doki Panic/SMB USA) Spud, it's okay to call it "Super Mario Bros. 2" here. We all know what you mean and it's the game's proper name. You're not Japanese. :) And YL, you can also jump in SSB/M using the C Buttons or X and Y. I imagine the same will follow with Brawl (although I imagine the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo will use something different. Who knows?).

Actually, I still get confused between the two SMB2j and SMB2u does the trick usually. In my eyes (at least these days), SMB2j is the true intermediary between SMB and SMB3. SMB2u is just a nifty aside, like Wario Land or Yoshi's Island.

Hehe! My first thought on seeing this was Ice Climber. Then I remembered Kirby Superstar does this as well (but only if you hit Up at the exact right moment)
Nice to see Sakurai paying homage to his classics ;p

He definatly has taken a lot of inspiration from the older kirby games. Namely Kirby Super Star.

I wouldn't say it was inspiration... you tend to take stuff you like from your previous works. Think of the SSB series as a set of sequels to Kirby Super Star

That is especially true if you think of the rest of characters as Kirby enemies he can swallow Kirby is hinted as the host of the game (perhaps because of HAL itself and Sakurai)... He's fighting Mario in the intro sequence for SSB64 and this new SSBB game mode. Also he's at the center of the selection screen in SSBM.

SMB2u is just a nifty aside, like Wario Land or Yoshi's Island. As an American, I'll always think of SMB2u as Super Mario Bros 2 and SMB2j as The Lost Levels. SMB2j does feel more like an expansion pack to me rather than a full-on sequel. Of course, SMB2u feels like a completely different game all-together, but in the gaming climate of the time, with other sequels like Zelda II and Castlevania 2, the drastic change wasn't too unusual.

Kirby and Mario next to each other are really symbolic of Nintendo and Hal's relationship.
