Why throw away an entire character? The clones I can imagine, but these characters have a unique moveset and it would probably be comparatively easy to incorporate them in Brawl.
If I had to pick one, I would have to choose for Mr. Game and Watch, even though I like playing with him more. I think the Ice Climbers make a better representative.

Mr. Game & Watch was made to pay tribute to Gunpei Yokoi. As soon as Yokoi passed away, Nintendo immediately brought the Game & Watch Gallery series to help remember not only the Game & Watch series, but also Gunpei Yokoi. Game & Watch was the earliest one-game, LCD handhelds before the popular Tiger handhelds. If there isn't another Game & Watch Gallery title being developed, then Mr. Game & Watch might not return. However, the Nintendo DS would make a very nice system for playing both Classic and Modern versions of the Multi-Screen Game & Watch handhelds. Even though, Club Nintendo of Japan released Game & Watch Collection, which has only three G&W games, it doesn't look much like the Game & Watch Gallery series.

(Just a thought) One of the DS cooking games, Shaberu DS Oryouri Navi, also has a Game & Watch game called "Chef". Speaking of Shaberu DS Oryouri Navi, Satoru Iwata at this year's E3 said that he uses this DS title every time he cooks.

Well, if it's Game & Watch games you want on the DS, then WarioWare: Touched has a couple. (Just a thought) Those are just microgames, or souvenirs? Now that you mention that, the use of the stylus could become a "third" game mode for Game & Watch Gallery games besides Classic and Modern. You could even have a fourth one with the use of the microphone, or a fifth one that is wireless Mr. Game & Watch... They could have let his model be 3-D in the released game, and he would still represent the Game & Watch era. They could have even made a special Mario alter-ego that performed his moves, and it would still be a tribute to the Game & Watch handhelds. They could even make your Mii be Mr. Game & Watch, and Game & Watch stays. Game & Watch references will likely stay, no matter who symbolizes it.

I'd love to see the end of Mr. Game & Watch, and see more in the way of actual Game & Watch characters, references and so on. If he's loved, maybe he could even be an Assist. But he was pretty lame.
Ice Climbers were interesting when they were announced, they played in a unique way, and they cover a retro contingent.
And yes, I really REALLY don't want to have to stab one more person in the eye for suggesting Pit represents the classic NES, and so Ice Climbers are overwritten. Nintendo of America is NOT making SSBB!! Link and Samus are both older than Pit (by less than a year, but whatever)... Mario was the big NES star, Peach and Bowser were introduced in 1985... why isn't anyone making the ludicrous claim that THEY replace Ice Climbers as the NES representatives?

I wonder if Sakurai ever considered (early or late) that Alice and probably every other balloon fighter can do stuff when losing their balloons. Tingle should. I think Tingle would make a fine Balloon Fighter. Imagine a Zelda-themed Balloon Fighter!

In other words, his series was not NES exclusive, nor was it a oneshot or a forgotten title. Kid Icarus was included in the upper pantheon with Legend of Zelda and Metroid for years. How many people do I have to keep telling that? Pit is NOT the NES rep.Although I agree, keep in mind that the much superior Kid Icarus 2 was never released in Japan. For Japan, he is very much a one-hit wonder and is no more deserving of a SSB spot than Tamagon and other forgotten NES heroes.

We'vve been ovber this, but Pit is a Disk System rep. Not Famicom. Also, I think Pit is a little more deserving as character then Tamagon as he has been wanted more. Of course, that's just my thoughts on it.

I think Ice Climber doesn't hold much water as a franchise. It gave all it had in Melee. Characters picked to represent certain era instead they own series. Many characters can do that.
In the other way, G&W is still one of the most recognizable Nintendo characters. Just show him to somebody, he'll tell you he/she had a tic-tac-tic console back then. 40 million units sold and more than 50 titles, that's something.
So, if I had to pick one of the two, it'll be G&W, but I have the feeling that both franchises will end cut...

Based on no actual info or logic, I think Game & watch will be cut. I don't know, he just doesn't seem feasable, and is more of a joke character. For some reason, he seems likely to get cut.

I would rather him come in as an assist trophy. Apparently so would a lot of other people. Ice Climbers actually make more sense as a character.

Hmm... I could someday understand Mr. Game & Watch coming back as a playable character. But I reckon it would be worse as an Assist Trophy (or as the only one). Assist Trophies is how the individual G&W characters of all shapes should appear if they don't as playable characters.
You know, trophies were the "library" of Nintendo knowledge in SSBM. If that knowledge is limited to what Mr. Game & Watch offered in SSBM, it would be boring...

A different attack each time, just like Knuckle Joe.

But the only game that Mr. Game & Watch appeared in for real was Fire, and not as a playable character. His only Assist Trophy attack would be to jump off the edge of the stage.
