We think one franchise isn't coming back. We don't know anything for sure--all we have for it is some Anonymous' post on GameFaqs. I'm prone to not trusting or believing the various Anonymouses of the internet, and this guy is hardly an exception.
But if you're asking me to make a call, I'd like to see Game & Watch stay over the Ice Climbers; Japan may keep the Famicom and Disk System seperate, but to me they're both the NES. With Pit around, we don't really need the Ice Climbers as the representatives to that era of Nintendo...and I've honestly never been a big fan of how the Ice Climbers play anyway.
Mr. Game & Watch, meanwhile, can't be lumped in with any other eras. Sure, he kind of sucked too in Melee, but there's always room for improvement. And he had the awesomest music.

And he had the awesomest music. Quoted for being chock full of win. I loved both Mr. G&W and the Ice Climbers, but personally I think G&W is more important as a representative of Nintendo history. So I'd like to see him back more.

Both seem to have been introduced in memory of the hardware their games were run on and not as a tribute to their own games, so the chances of both aren't that good.
Mr. Game & Watch was a really creative character, but he's just a retro symbol instead of an actual, specific character that appeared in Game & Watch handhelds. That's what is different between him and the rest of SSBM characters. And who is assuring that Mr. Game & Watch will keep being the way to remember Game & Watch handhelds? There are other ways.
The Ice Climber characters have always been named as seen in the instruction booklet, and they have unique mechanics in SSBM, which not many other likely character duos from Nintendo can emulate successfully. But since Sakurai only picked a Famicom character (duo) just for the sake of representing the Famicom, and since Ice Climber is a lone game with no sequels, that makes you wonder if there will be other ways to represent the Famicom.
Rumors or no rumors at all, I prefer the Ice Climbers, and I wish they made a revamped stage for them and introduced some item from their game if they have to come back.

Whatever. I don't believe it. As far as I'm concerned, the only characters getting the axe are some of the clones, namely Young Link, Roy, Dr. Mario, and Pichu.

Yeah, I'd like G & W to stay. He's got cool attacks.

Ice Climbers. They're actual characters and their dynamic is a lot more novel than a 2D character. And regardless of the Famicom vs Disk System thing, Pit's in the same realm as Link and Samus--he's not from the old NES days.
In other words, his series was not NES exclusive, nor was it a oneshot or a forgotten title. Kid Icarus was included in the upper pantheon with Legend of Zelda and Metroid for years. How many people do I have to keep telling that? Pit is NOT the NES rep.

Their both back. Killing off good characters for no reason makes no sense. They could whip out a model for Ice Climbers in no time, The difficult part would be the Nana AI, but copy it from melee if nothing else. Same with the G&W Flatness.

How about Skull Kid as the next Ice Climbers? He could have his puppet with him... Or even Baby Mario and Baby Luigi would work.

Not a big fan of IC clones
I personally more for Ice Climber. I don't think we need Game & Watch that baddly. He's from an era no one remebers, and you don't have to represent everything. But the Famicom needs something. Plus, Game & Watch stuff can always apper in other ways.
I like both, but I'd chose ICs for someone to stay. Plus, they'd be hard to replacew. I can't see a good Ballon Fighter moveset.

Tingle as a balloon fighter would have better stuff.

I wonder if Sakurai ever considered (early or late) that Alice and probably every other balloon fighter can do stuff when losing their balloons. Tingle should.

I serious hope to see both coming back. The clones are likely to be wiped out, and I don't think Ness stands a high chance (Well, I seriously want to see a 12... nah, 19+6-4=21 back!)...
I think Mr G&W will have ahigher chance to stay.

I'll play along, even though I doubt the believability of some random GameFAQer.
I think that both have their own merits, but I'd prefer Mr. G&W to stay. I like playing as him more, even if he's difficult to use.

Just a thought. Wasn't there a poll for the character you want to see return the most?
