As the title suggested, this thread is about triangles - specifically, the triangles that appear on the side of GCN boxes. What are they for, exactly? And how are the 3 colours (brown, green and pink) worked out?
I had a discussion about this ages ago (I'm talking at least two years ago) on another forum, but I don't think we ever worked it out. It would seem that, in terms of colours, the Brown is for first party / Nintendo released games, the Green for exclusive titles by 3rd parties, and the Pink for multi-console games. Or so it would seem most of the time, but some games (specifically Simpsons Hit & Run in my collection) break the trend (H&R has a green triangle). Anybody know anything about this? I figured if I was ever going to find out, here would be the place to go.

I didn't see any triangles on any of my games either. What region of game are they?

On the PAL games there's a little green triangle on the spine of all of the games I own except one... Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life has a little purple triangle. But it can't just be first-party published games, because there's a green triangle on Sonic Mega Collection, Soul Calibur and Super Monkey Ball. And it can't be Gamecube exclusives, because there's also a green triangle on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Please note that some of these games are technically my girlfriend's.

I got no idea what you're talking about, none of my games have triangles on them.

That's exactly the same for my collection. I'd like to know if those triangles have any meaning. I've wondered about it since I got Harvest Moon.

Well, it must only be on the Australian PAL games. In my collection, there are:
Brown triangles on - SSBM, SMS, LM, TLOZ:TWW, MP, MP2, MP4, MP5, PM: TTYD, SCII, MKDD, MPT, MGTT, 1080 Avalance, and Wave Race BS.
Green Triangles on - VJ, SMB2 and Simpsons Hit & Run
Pink Triangles on - Simpsons Road Rage
not a very varied bunch, a know, but I'm 99.999% sure they are on every case here. I assumed they'd be on all the others as well.
I thought for sure you'd know straight away... I guess not. Perhaps is time to use some of my "world famous"* detective skills.
(*NOTE: May not actually be world famous)

My Soul Calibur II is green... it is odd. Maybe a trip to the Game store will sort things out And SMB2 is Super Monkey Ball 2.

I think that SCII was distributed by Nintendo Australia here, though. Which may be why it gets a brown triangle.

Over here SC2 is one of the few third-party published games that comes with a Stars Catalogue entry number for the Nintendo Europe website.

I remember seeing that on Nintendo Europe's site... Another good reason why I should buy that game. Now if only I had the money...

I think I've worked it out.... well, a little bit of it anyway. Brown is for games packaged in Australia. It fits, as all of my brown triangled ones have an Australian address on the back, while my Green and Pink have Europe on the back. And considering that Fryguy said that his have green, that would mean that more than likely European ones get Green. What that means for Pink and Purple I do not know. I found it doesn't stop at the sides of GCN boxes - they appear on the instruction manuals (some have them on the top left corner of the back, others have them on the top left corner at the front and the top right corner on the back), on the back of DS cases (bottom left corner), on DS Manuals (on the back), on GBA manuals (front, bottom left corner) and, what lead me to work out (at least, I think I've worked it out) - the 'flaps' on the top of a GBA box (These were marked with about 7 letters and then the word 'AUS'). So it would certainly seem it some sort of regioning thing. All of my DS and GBA games (aside from DBZ: Legacy of Goku (don't laugh, I bought that a while ago )) are Australian, and, sure enough, have these brown triangles (or box flaps) somewhere. I no longer have the DBZ box, nor does it have a triangle of the manual, but it is certain not packed in Australia. So yeah, I think a bit of the mystery has been solved - now we need to find out what the purple and pink (and possibly any other colours) are for, and what the damn things are used for. Wooo! Triangles!

My purple game says "Assembled in Europe" as well. Hmm...

Maybe they correspond to the game's suggested age rating, like Kids to Adults.
