You know what would be cool, If they gave Link all the different clothes from his different incarnations (just the clothes, not necessary the facial and hair change).
Also I wouldn't like to See costumes were the character turns into a different character, for just one simple reason VOICES, a brand new voice pack its quite a deal and I wouldn´t like to play with Lucas just to hear the announcer say " The winner is Ness" (the same reason why I think the Pokemon Trainer is not called Red)
The Daisy costume in Melee and the Wario one for Mario were fine because it was obvious that they were just Mario and Peach wearing they doublegangers clothes.

And what about the Blood Falcon costume? That was a complete change into another character, but the announcer still called him Captain Falcon. I don't think anyone was really bothered by it.

Here are my suggestions:
Link => Fierce Deity Link, Dark Link Mario => Dr. Mario, Fire Flower Outfit

Mario = Dr Mario, Shadow Mario, Short Sleeve Mario (SMS), Tropical Mario(SMS), Fire Mario, Strikes Mario.
Link = Oni Link, Ranch Link, Dark Link, Sumo Link, Really Old Link (WarioWareSM)

Don't forget, it's not just about what they are wearing. They actually have to look drastically different from each other (colour, usually) to avoid confusion during the frantic battles.
So while I'd love to see short-sleeved Mario, it wouldn't make the cut. Same goes for NES Power Suit Samus and "Big Shoulders" Samus. There's no colour alteration, so they could easily be confused. Apart from the big shoulders.
But seeing more complete changes of costume would be preferred to simple colour swaps. While impossible for some characters, where it is possible it would be cool. But yes... so long as it didn't actually have any effect on the character's stats. I fail to see how that could work in a satisfactory way (although it would be awesome - swaps rather than a load of clones!)

I remeber I had an Idea when I first joined these forums ^You know wjhat, lwets leave ZSS as the only transform character. Getting a bit chiche. Two characters using a transform doesn't seem that cliche to me, and Samus appears to change into Zero Suite Samus after using Samus' orb move while Zelda changes as a move in and of itself. And if I may, Clone characters could cycle though the same way colours do. I.E. Put your cursor on Mario and hit (+) and (-) to cycle though colors and use (1) and (2) to cycle though clones like Mario > Dr. Mario > Shadow Mario > Papa from Doki Doki Panic.

I always thought that clone characters could work that way (cycled through), but I would only find it necessary if the character list isn't all that big, and this was also before assist trophies, too.
As for alternate costume as separate colours, I don't see it happening. What about a colour editor that lets you choose you're own colour schemes, though?

Paper Mario being Mario's alternate costume? You do realize that requires another 3-D character model? Too much work and takes up time and space.
Alternate costumes being color swaps are the way to go.
