IGN is giving their coverage of the San Francisco Conference where Brawl was the major highlight (and only game they weren't NDA'd for )
There are gameplay videos of the conference's Brawl demo on another thread, but here I am going to mention some of the things IGN did for those curious. Also will be stuff I've read or noticed in videos (all legit sources, of course)
Final Smashes
-Smash Balls will move around on their own and need to be "cracked" by beating the hell out of them before you get the power
-Final Smashes are executed by pressing B while you're on fire
-More than one Smash Ball can appear on stage at a time, and, in reality, they're very common items
-Zooms in when the character transforms/whatever, but doesn't focus primarily on them
-If you are hit a lot while on fire, you can LOSE the Smash Ball, a la Kirby games
-Peach: Pictures of Peach appear on both sides of the screen and rose vines grow up along the edges. All characters fall asleep in a burst of petals and a slew of peaches, flowers, and food fall down to the stage, hurting them. Peach is free to eat these and heal up
-Meta Knight: Swings out his cape and lets out a huge arching slash. Anybody caught in the vicinity of Meta Knight sustains heavy, heavy damage as the screen comes back
-Pit yells for Palutena in his FS, which was not known. It is unknown if he is also invincible during the Centurion attack, as he glows gold
-Ike: Slashes the nearest player repeatedly like Link. Probably looks a bit different.
-Zero Suit Samus: Zamus glows with a burst of energy and her suit reappears. Anybody near her is dealt light damage, but knocked back nonetheless. Similar to Crystal Flash?
Sonic
-Sonic's B attack is the Homing Attack from the Adventure games. Pressing B curls him into a ball and hurls him at the nearest player. You can combo really easy with this move.
-Super Sonic is CHEAP. You are invincible, can fly freely, and just touching people hurts them. The catch is that you have very, very slippery controls, so flight is a constant struggle to stay in one spot
-Sonic's FSmash is a Wind-up Punch, from Sonic the Fighters
-Sonic's Down B is chargeable, while the Side B is not. The major differences are like Sonic 1's roll and Sonic 2's roll, if you can think of it that way.
-Sonic has very, very loose controls. It's easy to fall off stage a lot
Character Intros
-Link appears in a dirvish. When was THAT in Twilight Princess?
-Sonic just bounces onto the stage
-Samus walks out of the Save Station
-Mario leaps from a pipe with his fist out and yells, "Here we go!", but not all the time
-Bowser spins out of his shell in a burst of flames
-Fox rides in on the Arwing
-DK bursts out of a DK Barrel and beats his chest. Diddy does the same, but claps.
-Meta Knight appears out of thin air furled in his cape
-Yoshi hatches from an egg
Items
-Home Run Bat apparently has unique animations for each character. That was the case in Melee too, but they made a note of saying it this time. Hmm..
-Some sort of Urchin creature is an item. It's maybe from Clu Clu Land, and it just sits on a stage and acts as a spike hazard. You can hit it to cause it to shrink and fly away, but it grows back if it isn't knocked off the level.
-Beam Sword is now a very cool blue, AND at full length once again. Random colors?
-Fan is confirmed to return
-Party Balls are confirmed to return
-Fire Flowers confirmed, New Super Mario Bros. look
-Smart Bombs from Star Fox are a new item. They explode at the end of their throw in a large burst, similar to the Banzai Bills in Melee
-TONS of Food
-Capsules are back
-Hammer is back. When Pit swings it, it has two frames: just like Game and Watch AND the original Kid Icarus. Cool, huh?
-Golden Hammer is weaker than regular Hammer
-Screw Attack is worn like Bunny Hood now, meaning you can use other items on top of this one
-Springboards from Super Mario Bros./Donkey Kong are in the game. Maybe turning Sonic's Up B into an item?
Assists
-Metroid: latches onto a player and leeches health
-Advance Wars: GBA sprites of the Orange Star army charge the opponent a la Excitebike/Marril, firing off missiles and rifle shots. They are little midgets, so it looks amusing as all hell
-Drill Dozer: Jill and her Dozer ram into an opponent and drill the hell out of them (full 3D)
-Mr. EAD (my guess; IGN says "fat guy"): not sure what he does, they just say he attacks
-LITTLE MAC >:/ He dashes around boxing random fighters
-The Assist Trophy item can just be broken to activate, similar to crates and barrels
-Munchlax has a really deep voice. It's kinda creepy
-Staryu is back. Yay?
-Gardevoir appears and does what could be Reflect, protecting the player in its bubble radius from oncoming attacks as she floats around.
-Sin and Punishment Character, who fires and slashes as they run after the nearest player
-Latios and Latias appear from opposite sides and swoop down, squashing players caught between them. They both come from one Pokeball?
Other Fighters
-Diddy Kong's Down B and Side B are confirmed. The Down B is the ability to leave a trail of banana peels. The Side B is a mauling attack, where Diddy leaps and attacks the face of the opponent XD XD
-Meta Knight's Mach Tornado move is basically Kirby's Tornado Ability
-Diddy Kong makes monkey noises. He retains some of his voice samples in addition to this.
-Ike has Roy's voice
-Pit's voice is deeper than the original E3 trailer. Also, the Wings of Icarus attack lasts a shorter amount of time than Peach can hover, so no worries about cheap flying around
-Diddy Kong's Smashes are multi hit, and his aerial attacks are pretty powerful. Seems to be played similar to Jigglypuff (all air)
-Mario keeps FLUDD on his back until it randomly disappears. It looks awkward on his back with the Super Cape attack.
-Samus's "smash" Missiles now look like the Super Missiles in Super Metroid. Her bombs look more like Power Bombs, which is weird.
-Pit's Side B is confirmed (to be lame...). He dashes forwards, then whirls the bow like a spinning fan blade to deal combo damage.
-Yoshi does a strange attack/maneuver where he rolls forwards, sits on the ground, then tumbles again. He still is shown rolling in his egg, and doing his FSmash, so this move is currently unknown.
-Samus gets back her old SSB64 Screwball, with more damage potential. Likewise, Mario recovers his old SBB64 aerial attacks (save the new Dair Mario Tornado).
-Mario's Cape now whips people away in some instances, instead of just spinning them
-Ike has a completely unique moveset, despite having the same voice and stats as Roy. His Side B is a chargeable dashing attack that ends when he hits an opponent.
-A lot of characters have fresh and original sound bites added to the game (thankfully)
-Zero Suit Samus uses the whip for both A and B attacks. She's slower than Sheik, and not as flowy.
-Peach Bomber explodes in hearts, now a reference to her Vibes. Also a lot weaker than before
-Diddy is fast, similar to Pikachu
-Bowser has gotten bigger
-Meta Knight's Shuttle Loop (Up B) can automatically become a glide right after use. His Side B, Triple Spin, can be arched as he flies forwards. His Down B, Dimensional Cape, is a "downwards teleport" that works similar to Kirby's Stone power, except a lot weaker.
-Bowser's Koopa Claw attack now turns into crazy Suplex moves from Kirby Superstar. In one video, Bowser grabs Meta Knight in midair, flies backwards in a mid-air somersault, and slams him into the ground. An amazingly cool looking move now.
-Bowser is HUGE now. Easily much larger than before.
-Diddy Kong has the Cartwheel as his Dashing A (like I predicted ;p)
Costumes
-Pit has a yellow costume
-Pikachu shares his old AND Pichu's costumes
-Yoshi has same costume colors
-One of Link's costumes is Dark Link, presumably a fully black coloring
-Mario has all his old costumes, PLUS a Waluigi color scheme
-Meta Knight's costumes are extreme: white mask with gray colors; reds; greens; BLACK with red eyes and purple collar (looks really weird). His black costume has a red bat on the top of the cape, or at least it IS red at the top.
-Ike has a Sigurd-esque costume
-Mario gets the Fire Mario costume (yay!)
-DK has a completely white costume, making him look albino
Stages
-Metroid stage is Norfair (GUESS WHO CALLED IT? ;D)
-Selection screen now shows who's playing in the corner with tiny little icons
-Franchise logos look really nice above the stage names, esp. Kid Icarus
-Castle Siege has a vocal version of the FE Main Theme has the main track.
-When you fall in Castle Siege, you're still fighting on a flat level >.>
-The third tier is indeed a lava dungeon. It's a singular rock platform with an epic view of lava fields and fire. The rock platform can teeter back and forth sometimes.
-The Castle Siege cycles through all 3 tiers. So, right after the basement it warps you back to the castle rooftop
-Yoshi's Island still has Wintertime, and the music is a very slow remix of the main YI theme that kinda follows the seasons. Shy Guys drop items, btw
-Delfino Plaza gets a Delfino Plaza remix
-Norfair is the Metroid level. It looks FANTASTIC. Five platforms hover over lava in a V-shape with Norfair in the background. Occasionally lava rises or forms a giant wave to cover the platforms. The music is Norfair Depths/Magmoor Caverns or the Super Metroid Anthem (Samus's Theme). This was my prediction for a Metroid level, so I'm content ;D
-Smashville has a new track: the AC Title Music
-When a fight begins, the music selected for battle appears in the top left corner with a little music note before fading away
-Pokemon Stadium 2's Pokemon interact with fighters.
-Stadium 2's Electric mode has a bunch of conveyor belts, may shock players as well
-Halberd takes place mostly on the floating platform with the Halberd flying in the back, but it does start in the hangar. When you land on the Halberd, the level becomes much larger. The Dual Cannon can lock on to players and fire its beam at the screen, dealing heavy damage.
-Halberd music was very "military," but I couldn't place it.
Misc.
-Announcer is different. Very "Sports Announcer" type voice.
-Victory Screen is back to SSB64 style.
-Meta Knight has a rock version of the Kirby dance, AND he talks with his Japanese voice (in English) when winning. "You have much to learn..." and "I am the champion" are two things that he says.
-When Diddy Kong loses, he takes off his cap and scratches his head: just like DKC
-Charging Smashes turns your character white, keeps the Smash "spark" above them
-THREE taunts per character
-Star KOs are back
-Characters taunt with their held items out, unlike Melee
-One of Pit's Victory Taunts is where he slashes out the blades to his sides and lands on one knee. Music is still unknown.
-Mario still has the "spin and pump fist" victory taunt
-Meta Knight throws out his cape and slashes for a victory taunt
-When a match ends, the game slows down and freezes like Stamina Mode in Melee (don't know if I like that...)
...more will be added soon. IGN added their own videos!
EDIT: Added stuff from IGN vids. Nice!
