I've had a couple of ideas in this vein:
A small planet that's basically a circular stage you can walk all the way round (woo! Upside-down Brawl!), and the only chance of a K.O. would be with huge amounts of damage or a really big attack, due to the lack of edges to throw people off. Perfect for an endurance match.
OR one of the flat planets from the game as a more conventional stage, maybe even fighting on the Comet Observatory!
OR various planets in a Poke Floats type stage.
Even if these are all very unlikely, I would still want some musical representation from the game. Galaxy's music is awesome. Bowser's boss-battle tune and the Red Star theme spring to mind.

The top one has to be done, either as a Galaxy stage or even as a Raphael the Raven's moon stage. And yes, we need Galaxy music.

Yeah, I think the stage where you fight Bowser (this isn't a spoiler since you fight him near the beginning of the game) would work well. If you fall in the lava pit, you would be blasted away...depending on your damage of course...

If it happens, I can almost definitely see this being either a Poke Floats style stage, or just one of the random larger stages being picked.

No, a small Planetoid would be fantastic and totally Sakurai's style. I can see it being something like Gateway Galaxy.
The Yoshi's Island moon is visible in the YI stage already, I should add.

As awesome as it would be it would be a bitch to program for just one level. I could see a Galaxy stage with a bunch of goofy planets with the normal 'smash physics' showing up though.

A planet with a black hole in its center would be best, but one never knows. There's more than one way you can play with gravity if that's too player-unfriendly to build. You can as well have a stage with those gravitation arrows that change the direction of the gravity at times for example.
I think Good Egg Galaxy or a similar location (like Space Junk Galaxy) is perfect because of its music and because it's set in space with the Mushroom World in the background. Cameos of the planets of Dino Piranha and King Kaliente would be necessary here.
Another approach that wouldn't be too good is a Brinstar Depths-like stage with a constant downwards gravity.

The Planetoid idea is neat, and I'd like to see it in execution, but that makes the following problem crop up: How well would it work with SSB physics? Even despite the game's lack of camera control, it still adjusts itself automatically so that, from Mario's view, 95% of the time you're still looking at the screen as you should so the controls don't invert. The places where the camera doesn't accommodate you make the controls a complete bitch (Battle Rock, Dreadnaught, Dusty Dune...I'm lookin' at alla you).
I'd rather have a more traditional level--set maybe in Space Junk Galaxy in an area like the 5 Silver Stars place, since that lends itself well to a conventional, yet original level that doesn't bork with the physics.

I like this idea, but man, it would be tricky to pull off. But it would be very awesome if they could somehow make it work.

That's the main issue with a planet, to make it easy to fight on it.
Unfortunately, it's a multiplayer game and the best way I currently see it being comfortable is when the 2~4 players have 2~4 screens so that the camera always follows the character that the current player is using (so that you don't have to convert the directions in your mind).
Other features, like invisibility items, could work better with more than 1 screen per group of players.

\Another approach that wouldn't be too good is a Brinstar Depths-like stage with a constant downwards gravity. Wasn't that what we had proposed? Well, I thought you guys meant a trip by many planetoids with automatic scrolling and not a fixed one that doesn't have its own gravity... The "trip by many planetoids" approach seems more adequate of course (although few galaxies have many planetoids you can just jump to from others). But my vote is Old Man Rupee's #1 choice if possible--don't forget at least one radial pit and a black hole in the center, though!

As awesome as it would be it would be a gonzo to program for just one level. I could see a Galaxy stage with a bunch of goofy planets with the normal 'smash physics' showing up though. Not really since the physics are probably part of a subroutine that could be Copy-Pasted and modified. So what if it's for one level, if it's awesome it's feasible. Thats probably the dumbest logic you'll ever hear me use, just don't remove the context

This would be a great idea! And meteors could fly from everywhere and break into Star Bits! And the Star Bits could be like food! Oh I love IT!
