Are you someone who refuses to play as a different character? I don't mind playing as different characters as long as I don't start a match playing as one character and about halfway through, have to adapt my playing style because of some gimmicky pokemon. Hopefully, seeing as Manaphy is a legendary pokemon, I won't see him too often, but when I do, I'm gonna get the hell away from him. Fast. Also, I know Sakurai has added some weird stuff to this game, but I feel this whole character swap idea is too weird for my liking. And yes, I do prefer the boring 'How to Play' updates to this. They at least re-affirmed my thinking that I can play this game like I play melee.

Personally, I think that this is the worst update so far. Even worse than a certain character being revealed as playable. Alright, you hated this update, I'm not going to say anything about that. But why, for God's name, are you still complaining about Sonic?! Christ! That was over two months ago! Also, it appears the Smash Bros site is down.

Switching characters half-way into the match is a pretty cool idea. I think it'll encourage people to play with more than one or two characters.

I saw this and immediately thought of the ? Mushroom from SMB3's 2-player Battle Game on Super Mario All-Stars.

Sakurai has a fetish, hehe.
And man, I MISS that SMB3 versus game. We hardly ever got anything but the Mario Bros. clone, but occasionally you could luck out and get the coin catching or ladder climbing levels. Nostalgia...

Ah I see now.
Heart Swap is an attack... and Manaphy is the only one that can learn it. Awesome! I love when they use Signature Moves in Smash Brothers.
It's awesome to think of how people are going to react. Either they try a suicide... or if that doesn't work.... they do whatever they can to build up their own damage. Jumping in front of the Halberd's combo cannon.... walking into bombs.... it's like, both players will run away from each other and go insane. Or I guess if there were 4 players you could just focus on the uneffected ones... but that's no fun. I'm going to try to kill the person I swapped with... FROM WITHIN... Mwu ha ha ha haha! Oh and you have to try to stop, YOUR, character from hurting themselves. So if you see them run toward a bob-omb... you have to hit it before they do.
Oh, let's say... while you're swapped.... a heart piece shows up! Then a REAL interesting scenario opens up.... You can't get it until you swap back... but you want to be the one who gets it.
I hope the amount of time you're swapped for is random too. That will make the suicide move useless... as you don't want to jump off... and then NOT switch during the jump... you'll lose a life.
I love Manaphy.... I didn't even think of something like this... but it causes PURE CHAOS!
It also shows that Pokemon attacks are original this time around... and are more than just different attacks. There were a few interesting attacks in melee (metronome was nice, and I like Wobbuffet) but who knows what Brawl might have? Maybe there will be attacks like Me First, Encore, Trick Room, Destiny Bond, Future Sight, or some other interesting ones.

I personally took the 'You'r damage meter remains how it was comment' to suggest that if player 1 takes damage, it will still add to player 1's damage meter, regardless of whether you're in the body of DK or Zelda. So an emo-style self damage rampage wouldn't work.
But who knows?

I really like this idea. It adds chaos to the game, never knowing when you're going to need to suddenly adapt a different character and keep on the attack. Awesome concept. ^_^

Sqrt, thank you for contributing your opinion. Next time, do that in your first post I think people are getting very hung up about the gimmicky stuff. Stop and think about it for a minute and you'll realise the whole game - nay, the whole series - is a giant pile of gimmicks. When SSB64 came out, the gimmick was being able to fight with Mario, Link, Pikachu and so on. And the items and stages were gimmicky, and the attacks, and all the other crazy stuff. Melee took it further, and this game further still. It's not a straight fighting game where you can learn what's going to happen by rote. It's a mad, random game where chance plays a huge part. You can still get awesome at it, but you can't ever strive for perfection. Those who try are doomed to fail or look like obsessive idiots. The effect of this Pokemon is only temporary anyway. I think there's a fair bit of confusion over how it works as well. Remember... the game keeps detailed records on you for bonuses and the like, and will probably be able to tell if it was you that jumped before the Heart Swap or not

This looks very fun. One would tend to think that all these cute legendaries would only give you bonus points, but it happens that Manaphy, Jirachi, and Shaymin all have signature moves that could be used in Brawl. Even if they don't, remember they can give you bonus gifts such as CDs. I saw this and immediately thought of the ? Mushroom from SMB3's 2-player Battle Game on Super Mario All-Stars. Even though their effects are very different, it somewhat reminded me of the Switch Hook from Oracle of Ages, whose effect could be more useful as a Special Move. About DiU's idea for Phione, I like it. Whether or not Phione gives you bonus points for releasing it would help Pokémon experts define more closely whether Phione should be considered a "legendary Pokémon" or not (IMO, Phione shouldn't).

At first I thought the update read "Mantyke," and that would have been kind of disappointing - but it was Manaphy instead and it blew my mind away. This is a fantastic little match fuck-upper! It'll be fun to be, say, Sonic for the match's start, only to suddenly be burdened down with Bowser or Dedede all of a sudden. It makes for fantastic times, IMO.
TEi approves yet again!

Is the smash bros site down for anyone else here? It's not showing up for me, neither are any of the pictures Parrothead posted...
