Green Hill Zone is the most memorable Sonic-based locale, period; Sonic the Hedgehog 1 is so crazy easily-accessable by gamers that it's hard to imagine somebody not having played it. I mean, Virtual Console, XBox Live Marketplace, the Sonic Mega Collections, various ports including the atrocity that is Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis and the Sega Superstar Collections...you get the picture. And Green Hill Zone is the first stage in Sonic 1, and given the game's playstyle (old school, no-savey, no-continues, start-at-game's-beginning-again), it stands out the most, I think. You know?
But I wouldn't have minded a Sonic Adventure level, either. I still maintain that a stage based on the Egg Carrier would have been wicked. ;D Would have been awesome to have all Eggman-themed music on it, too: the Egg Carrier theme, E.G.G.M.A.N., the Sonic the Hedgehog 1 Robotnik boss battle music, etc. etc.
