I think the two directions OOT made for Zelda both carry parts of the old Zelda ways. Wind Waker has the designs that seem almost like sprites come to life, I think, TP has the thrills in dungeons.I'd also say TP Link and Toon Link are the first two Links to show personality. TP Link wants to grow up and move foward, and does farming chores and swordfights generally. Toon Link's still a kid, wants to stay with his family, does neighbor chores like helping bring pigs to a family, and he's not as interested in fighting at first. I think Toon Link's taunt with him looking around shows that perfectly, as that's what he's more likely to do than TP Link when he has the chance. Also the Ordona Link would do a fancy sword sheathing victory pose, Toon Link's gonna go hunt down a stray pig: It's a chore of his, I think it seperates the two Links more than any other Link before, really.
Plus, now Link won't be fighting himself. Two Links not related and in different timelines fighting is less... odd.
On top of that, the facial expressions are far different. Young Link/Adult Link in Melee was odd because it really was just the same character in different bodies with altered stats. This time it feels like two different characters who have very similar fighting styles as they are, deep down, connected... however still not the same person.
Toon Link has the feel of being really aggressive but still a kid at heart. He goes in there flashing his sword and slashing like crazy, then panting because he doesn't realize how heavy the sword really is. He gets hit on the head and makes the most annoyed face he can, then wonders why the hell he entered. Adult Link has more appeal as "I'm doing this because I have to" and going in there always ready to kick some ass. He's got less personality than Toon Link, matching the two very different games, but he still exudes more maturity at what he does.
