I'm thinking 'couldn't fit' could very well be the reason they were cut.
The 'missing songs' probably weren't arrangements but originals taken straight from their games. Aren't Ballad of the Windfish, the Mario Luigi song and Yoshi Coockie music originally from the Gameboy, GBA and NES/SNES systems respectively? Maybe they didn't want to have old school music playing in those new stages, except on one of those really retro stages like 75m and Mario Bros, but the cut songs didn't really fit there either. Or maybe they were cut because it would cramp those levels' style or something. It would explain Mother's 8 melodies being cut out aswell anyway.

The VC is an emulator program, if I'm not wrong. And I, uh, speak from experience when I say EarthBound works with an emulator. BTW, Fry, the Mr. T lookalike was the first thing I ever tested out ZSNES's screenshot option with!

Yeah, being in Europe, the only way I could play EarthBound is emulated. I never had a problem running it. XD

I've played the Earthbound with Ness in it (first one im guessing). It was a good game but I still don't really recognise the Earthbound tracks in SSBB.
Apart from Ballad of the Windfish being cut there are over 300 songs in the game to enjoy anyways.

Ness' game was the second one. Strangely, all the Brawl songs are from either Mother 1 or 3, but the Mother 1 ones both appeared in Ness' game too.

It is strange. I thought there might be more Mother 2 remixed. But aside from the one that appears on the Melee Onett stage, that's it. Not even the Fourside stage music came back

Humeresque of a Little Dog originates in Mother, however. It is primarily remembered as the shop song, so you're not wrong.

It is Mother 2 though, as the song contains a snippit of "Because I Love You", or the song that plays after Giygas is defeated.

It is Sonic Adventure 2 though, as the song contains a snippit of "Unkown from M.E.", or the song that plays after Chaos is defeated. I think you need to get your games straight ;D

The SSBB song titled "MOTHER 2" is based on the song Pollyanna (I Believe in You) from MOTHER 1/NES EarthBound; however, the first part of the song can be heard in MOTHER 2/SNES EarthBound right at the part where Ness walks outside of the Minch family's home after Buzz Buzz passes away. Also, the second part of the song can be heard inside Ness's house at daytime.
The SSBB song titled simply as "MOTHER" is not only heard at the part where Loid joins you in MOTHER 1/NES EarthBound, but it's also heard during the part where Pippi joins you until you take here back to her home.
