Once you’ve gotten all the fighters, you can play All-Star mode. You can play this mode with either one or two players.
The rules are basically the same as Boss Battles. Beat all the characters that appear! After each fight, you go to the Rest Station and get refreshed. You keep repeating this pattern, but eventually you might use up the last Heart Container...
As for opponents, either Samus or Zero Suit Samus will appear—likewise, you’ll see either Zelda or Sheik. The Pokémon Trainer will bring out Charizard, Squirtle, and Ivysaur, so you’ll meet 37 characters in all.
The stage will be drawn from the game series the character comes from. As for the order, it will match the order that the games and series were released. Let’s take a look—the release dates are for the Japanese versions, by the way. <Battle 1: Game & Watch> (Release: 04/1980) Mr. Game & Watch is first. Let’s take a stroll through his various game series. <Battle 2: Mario Bros.> (Release: 07/1981) Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Peach all show up here. There are four of them, so stay on your guard.
<Battle 3: Donkey Kong> (Release: 07/1981) You’ll meet Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong here.
<Battle 4: Ice Climber> (Release: 01/1985) The Ice Climbers stand alone. Of course, they DO come as a pair... <Battle 5: R.O.B.> (Release: 07/1985) There’s no stage in particular for R.O.B., so he appears on the Mario Bros. stage. <Battle 6: The Legend of Zelda> (Release: 02/1986) Link, Zelda (or Sheik), Ganondorf, and Toon Link. There will be four of them, so try not to get overwhelmed. <Battle 7: Metroid> (Release: 08/1986) Samus or Zero Suit Samus will be here. You can tell which you’ll meet by the icons in the Rest Station. <Battle 8: Kid Icarus> (Release: 12/1986) Pit appears alone. This was the last series to appear on the Famicom Disk System in Japan. <Battle 9: Metal Gear> (Release: 07/1987) Fight against Snake on Shadow Moses Island. The first Metal Gear was actually created for the MSX2. <Battle 10: EarthBound> (Release: 07/1989) Ness and Lucas appear. New Pork City is a big place, but be careful not to take too much damage anyway. <Battle 11: Fire Emblem> (Release: 04/1990) Marth and Ike are waiting here. Seems like a long way to come from the strategy game to here! <Battle 12: Yoshi> (Release: 11/1990) Yoshi first appeared in Super Mario World. He’s become quite a star since then. <Battle 13: F-Zero> Captain Falcon fights on his own. Even though he’s a racer, he’s still quite a vigorous fighter. <Battle 14: Sonic The Hedgehog> (Release: 07/1991) Sonic also appears on his own. It seems like being a part of Smash Bros. really agrees with him. <Battle 15: Kirby’s Dream Land> (Release: 04/1992) Kirby, King Dedede, and Meta Knight. All of them have strong jumping and flight capabilities. <Battle 16: Star Fox> (Release: 02/1993) Fox, Falco, and Wolf appear here. This is a real crisis point—you’re bound to have trouble here. <Battle 17: WarioWare, Inc.> (Release: 01/1994) *The first game in which Wario was the main character Wario is all by himself. Even if you clear the minigames, you won’t be able to reduce your damage.
<Battle 18: Pokémon> [/img] (Release: 02/1996) Fight against Pikachu, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard, Lucario, and Jigglypuff. You’ve got six to fight in all. Talk about a tough row to hoe. <Battle 19: Pikmin> (Release: 10/2001) Fight with Olimar and the Pikmin. This is the final battle, so give it your all!!
It’s an incredible number of characters and a group of really well-known series. And to think that they all had their beginnings in Japan...wow!
When they’re all lined up like this, it becomes obvious that there is roughly 6-year blank before and after Pikmin. While there have been big series since then like "Animal Crossing," "Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day," and "Wii Sports" it does seem that coming up with a completely new character-driven series has gotten more difficult recently.

Take that Nintendo? Is that supposed to be a sly shot at them?

I take it you fight these battles 1-on-1, then 2-on-1 and finally 3-on-1 like in melee instead of 4/6-on-1? Because it's gonna really be hard if it isn't. 4/6-on-1 doesn't sound very fair to me (and yes I do know that in melee you fought 25 Mr G&W's five at a time).

It doesn't quite make sense to see Mii or Kawashima as characters, huh? But I want to see some AC character in!!!!!!
Question: Do I need to fight them all at once? Like there's a 6-on-1 or 6-on-2 match? If so... Make 8-player battles possible! Well, that's one major advancement I want to see in the 4th SSB.

I noticed how All-Star was ordered... and frankly I like it a whole lot better than in Melee. Anyone beat All-Star with all 37 characters (including ZZS and Sheik) and got all the Final Smash trophies? I got them all last week.
So Sakurai doesn't think Animal Crossing characters, Miis, and Professor Kawashima wouldn't work in Smash? Although I completely agree on Professor Kawashima, the others could work in Smash. Just give the axe, the shovel, the fishing pole, and the bug-catching net to the Animal Crossing character. The Mii could work as a Create-a-Fighter. How about Mii Builder in addition to Stage Builder in SSB4?
Anyway, awesome update today.

There aren't many series from that time, but that's not to say there are no characters from that era. We have Lucario, Toon Link, and Lucas as well as Pikmin.

Heh, I think it's more "we can't think of any good ideas for these characters" than a lack of new ones. What about Golden Sun, Custom Robo, Card Hero, Magical Vacation, etc.?

Exactly, Flip... just like how he said Balloon Fighter, Urban Champion, Excitebike, and Bubbles wouldn't work in Melee so Ice Climbers got in by default even though there are lots of fans who came up with pretty good movesets for these characters.

It's totally all based on recognition and individuality. Ice Climbers were far more unique than the other options. Similarly, Olimar and Pit represent the newer and older franchises respectively based on recognition. If it were Hiro and Takamaru, who the hell would even know who they were? Probably the reason we haven't seen Punch-Out or Golden Sun characters yet either: they're just not popular enough these days.

You forgot "War" series Sakurai, that series is old in Japan, but became character driven and international in 2001 (also I think Golden Sun Was popular enough, it had two games an fans have been asking for a sequel, unfortunately if a next Golden Sun doesn't came before Smash 4 it probably became a forgotten series ) Also all the new franchises created between Wario and Pokémon were sold to Microsoft remember that Finally Shouldn't Mario go before DK, even if both Mario Bros and Donkey Kong came on the same year .

The way All-Star mode works (for those curious) is that it's you (plus your friend if you have one) versus one or two opponents at a time. So, if you're on the Kid Icarus level of All-Star, you're just going to fight Pit; with MOTHER, you'll face Ness and Lucas at the same time; with Star Fox, you'll face either Fox and Falco, Fox and Wolf or Falco and Wolf; once you KO one of that combination, the remaining person drops in to fight. For Mario and Zelda, you start against two random characters (as Sakurai mentioned, you'll face either Zelda or Sheik at random), and a new fighter steps in as soon as someone is KOed until all four have stepped into the ring. So if you KO Link while facing him and Zelda, Ganondorf will appear; you can then KO Zelda or Ganondorf for Toon Link to drop in.
Pokémon is the exception to the rule: it plays identically to the same rules above, but you have to fight against all three of Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon before the match is over. So, say...Pikachu and Jigglypuff come first; KO one and Lucario drops in. KO any of this pair and either Ivysaur, Charizard or Squirtle drops in; only the Pokémon to follow the one you're fighting if you use Pokémon Change will appear upon KOing them.
Also, if you're doing it with a friend, you have to fight a team of two Olimars (one wearing the Louie colors) at the end.
For clearing All-Star mode with a character, you get Final Smash trophies; the issue with that is that Samus, Zero Suit Samus, Zelda and Shiek all have their own FS Trophies to gather (Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon all use one Final Smash, and thus share one trophy). It doesn't matter who you spend the duration of All-Star playing as, but you have to be one transformation or the other by the time you KO Olimar in order to obtain their trophy. A similar concept is applied when you go through Classic Mode (you have to be one transformation when you KO Master Hand in order to collect the Character trophy for them), only this time Pokémon Trainer is included in the mess, as Charizard, Ivysaur and Squirtle all have their own trophies.
So, yeah.
Oh, also - even though you can go through All-Star with two players, there's a Challenge that requires you to go through it with every character in the game alone. So don't be a dumbass (like me) and think you're being clever by doing it two at a time, cause it doesn't count those.

I know i have to beat that with all characters to get a trophy, then that will be really hard with some guys..

Finally Shouldn't Mario go before DK, even if both Mario Bros and Donkey Kong came on the same year . They didn't come out in the same year - Mario Bros. wasn't released until 1983. So the date refers to Mario's first appearance in Donkey Kong, and as he is Nintendo's mascot, I'm guessing he gets priority over the big monkey And anyway, they're in series order. Mother 1 may have been released in 1989, but Ness, Lucas, New Pork City... hell, even Mr. Saturn didn't show until later games. So it's weird he's been picky about Wario's first appearance as a main character. Also... woohoo! We have a month for Donkey Kong's release!
