In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for the GameCube, there is a building called Pianta Parlor in the town Rogueport. There you can play mini-games. In the building, there is a machine on the right side that shows you the current ranks of the players (I think so). The machine looks like the classic gray Game Boy. Screenshot at Super Mario Wiki

Yes, right up to the last boss... but I didn't really "side-quest" that much, and I also didn't really consider system cameos to be as important as franchise cameos.

This cameo caught me off-guard because I think it's SO obvious that it should be in NinDB since long ago! It's not like you can skip the parlor completely during gameplay! (This game made me think of.... ouchie. I'm at level 27, with HP upped twice, FP once and the rest BP. Now facing the final Bowser - just when I thought why the second-to-last was so easy, Bowser rammed in for no reasons!)
