Shemnue Online came out a long time ago. 2005, I think? It was exclusive to Korea. It is currently on hold.

No, Shenmue Online was never released anywhere. As of last year, according to Yu Suzuki, the game was still categorized as "in development," but it had been put on hold. Huh. Really? I thought I'd heard something about it being released. I know I've seen videos of it.

Heh. Yeah, I remember that. Of course, back then, Filter's lists were voted on by viewers, and G4 didn't have many of those. (There were probably less than 100 votes for each list.)
Still, it goes to show that Shenmue is one of those polarizing games. On another episode, it made the list for "most underrated."

I heard either Diane Mizota the host, the Filter staff or the G4 staff say that Shenmue is "boring" with "voice acting so cheesy you would rather go see Barney live." That's kind of like how Zelda fans disliked Toon Link during the release of The Wind Waker, and how Punch-Out!! fans hardly believe the blonde-haired boxer is Little Mac, even when the Wii Shop Channel says he is while the game he is from is the sequel to the NES Punch-Out!! series. They should get over it already.

I'm looking for some sailors.
Sailors? Have you seen any sailors?

So... this is the next Shenmue game? Didn't see that one coming. Certainly no Internet rumor could've predicted it. Not exactly the epic conclusion I was hoping for.

According to Kotaku, Shenmue Town is not a Sega game, meaning that it is not made, or even sanctioned, by Sega. However, it is supposedly begin created by a separate company started by Yu Suzuki. Yet, Suzuki still works at Sega, and Sega may make it official if they think the game will be popular. Curiouser and curiouser...

Actually, it's somewhat encouraging to hear Suzuki say he enjoys making games, because he hasn't been too active in that capacity since Shenmue II came out. I was under the impression that either Sega was keeping him in check as a punishment, or he had simply lost his confidence.
Either way, it sounds like he may be getting ready to get back into action.

1up.com has more details and a screen shot of Shenmue Town. Yu Suzuki also answered a question about Shenmue III, responding, "I feel like I want to make '3' on par with the previous games, and there are many requests from the fans for it. Tens of thousands have petitioned for it, and I want to take charge of this series as best I can." Encouraging words. And you think waiting for Beyond Good & Evil 2 is bad? Try being a Shenmue fan.

Heh. Well, UBI Soft's saying they canned some games, so I'm cautiously hoping BG&E2 isn't one of them. XD
